History Trinity College

Once upon a time in 1320, the city of Dublin saw the birth of its first university, granted existence by a papal brief issued by Pope Clement V a few years prior. For centuries it ping-ponged between places, never quite finding its footing until the Reformation put a period to its trials. But from its ashes, arose a new debate about establishing a fresh university at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Fast forward to 1592, a band of ambitious Dublin residents procured a charter from Queen Elizabeth to breathe life into Trinity College on the lands of the defunct Augustinian Priory of All Hallows. With Archbishop of Dublin, Adam Loftus as its first provost, the college gradually grew from a handful of students to secure considerable landed estates and a prestigious library.

However, Trinity's history was not without its controversies. It was built partly to fortify the Tudor monarchy's control over Ireland and hence, for a major portion of its history, Catholics, though allowed from the inception, faced a tricky path to graduation. They had to swear an oath they found detestable or live with certain restrictions on college membership.

Throughout the 18th century, Trinity College was synonymous with the Protestant Ascendancy. It enjoyed generous grants for building from the Parliament of Ireland. The Old Library, Printing House, and Dining Hall are all testimonials of this period. By the 19th century, Botany Bay, a square named partly after the herb garden it replaced, rounded off this construction spree.

Despite this, the college witnessed major developments in its professional schools during the 19th century. Take for example the law school, which underwent significant reorganisation mid-century. The medical school established in 1711 became an integral part of Dublin medicine under the guidance of one Macartney. And in 1842, came the Engineering School, a first of its kind in Ireland and Britain.

Nonetheless, complications persisted for Catholic graduates until the early steps in Catholic Emancipation. It was only in December 1845 that Denis Caulfield Heron challenged this system with his appeal to the Courts, though the decision remained against him. A few decades later, however, all these barriers to Catholics were finally repealed in 1873.

Just before the collapse of these restrictions, the Catholic bishops even imposed a ban on Catholic entrance to Trinity in 1871, fearing its Protestant ethos would influence them. It remained in place until 1970, primarily under Archbishop of Dublin John Charles McQuaid. Interesting to note, women were granted full membership only in 1904.

The 20th century saw further significant developments, with the Schools of Commerce and Social Studies merging into the School of Business and Social Studies in 1962. Post the Catholic Emancipation, the School of Pharmacy joined the roster in 1977 as the restrictions lifted on Catholics. The environment grew conducive for student inflow from the 1980s and 1990s, leading to investment in resources.

Today, Trinity College sits in the heart of Dublin. It's going through an overhaul of its academic structures to maximise funds and increase efficiency. Their 10-year strategic plan looks forward to four research themes to compete for global funding. It's also a patron for the Hamilton Mathematics Institute, launched in 2005 to promote Irish mathematics.

In 2021, history recorded yet another significant moment with the election of Linda Doyle as the first woman provost of Trinity College. A silent applause to their progress, Trinity College continues to be a beacon of Irish academia. And so, the story continues...
