History University of Cambridge

Let’s embark on a journey back to the year 1209, where the foundations of the illustrious University of Cambridge were laid. That time, Cambridge was considered a beacon of knowledge, generously illuminating the path for scholars across the region, thanks in no small part to the influence of monks from the nearby church in Ely. However, an unfortunate event at the University of Oxford breathed life into the idea of a new educational institution. Three innocents scholars met an untimely end at the hands of local authorities, resulting in a huge wave of scholars seeking refuge away from Oxford, with many washing up on the intellectual shores of Cambridge.

By the year 1225, Cambridge University had its own chancellor and was granted a key privilege by King Henry III - secundum consuetudinem universitatis, a right to set rental rates in Cambridge as per university customs. The new university's prestige was further elevated in 1290, when Pope Nicholas IV in a letter described it as a studium generale, a significant station for scholars wishing to engage in research or teaching.

Delving deeper into the university’s past, we learn that Humbly starting with informal gatherings of scholars, the first college - Peterhouse - was officially founded in 1284 by Bishop Hugh de Balsham of Ely. Over the century to follow, more colleges were incorporated into the university. But, these exceptional learning structures were not the university’s only claim to fame! Cambridge also dominated the academic landscape as a global leader in mathematics, highlighted by its renowned Mathematic Tripos examination. These certified ‘wranglers’ who topped this examination were celebrated across Britain for their intellectual prowess.

The formation of the University of Cambridge would not have been possible without the alliances and conflicts between the many interests of the time. From a Protestant schism to run-ins with the crown, the university’s foundation was anything but smooth sailing. One note-worthy example: the town and gown conflict between Cambridge townsfolk and university’s students respectively. The tension escalated during the unfortunate Peasants’ Revolt of 1381, leading to a burning of university properties at Market Square.

The groundbreaking initiative to embrace gender equality set a new tone in the previously male-dominated establishment. The first leap was made by accepting women in colleges like Girton and Newnham founded by visionary women such as Emily Davies and Anne Clough respectively, in the late 19th century. It were these bold steps that paved the way to a much more balanced male to female enrollment in the recent years, with the university reporting 53% and 47% respectively for the academic year 2019-2020.

The university hasn't stepped back from nurturing talent in modern times either, with more recent courses snooping into realms such as arts, architecture, archaeology, history, and modern languages. This includes the Cavendish Laboratory of physics fame which has made significant strides in atomic research. Cambridge University didn't just contend itself with shining domestically; it made a global mark by conferring PhD degrees since the early 20th century.

Cambridge University, steeped in rich history and countless traditions, has been through thick and thin, from medieval conflicts to worldwide wars, with the latter nearly bringing the university to its knees financially. Yet, the phoenix rose from the ashes, expanding not only in student intake but also positively impacting the city's economy.

With a glorious history that has seen more than 800 years, countless traditions, myths and legends adorning its mantle, the University of Cambridge continues its quest for knowledge, illuminating minds today, just like those monks in Ely all those centuries ago. Ingrid however, to truly understand what sets Cambridge apart, perhaps nothing can sum it up better than dialling in to the globally broadcast Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols every Christmas Eve. A tradition since 1918, it’s just a small part of the magnificence that is, the University of Cambridge.
