History Cardiff University

Delving into the past, one can trace back the roots of Cardiff University to the mid-nineteenth century. At that time, Welsh leaders were inspired by the Queen's Colleges in Ireland and proposed the establishment of similar colleges in Wales. This nationwide movement really picked up the pace when the government finally acknowledged the scarce availability of quality education in Wales in 1879. Committing to a positive change, in August 1880, they appointed a team, and thus, the quest for higher education in Wales began.

The dedicated team led by Lord Aberdare, conducted extensive research which involved evidence from numerous sources and witnesses. They presented their recommendation of setting up two colleges, one each in North and South Wales. The report resonated with the advocacy of a national university, non-sectarian in nature, and no teaching of theology.

The ball was set rolling to bring this vision to reality. As Cardiff and Swansea competed to house the university, Cardiff won the race. Bolstered by ample public appeal and generous private donations, mainly from Lord Bute and Lord Windsor, Cardiff became the decided location. The first president of the college was appointed in April. This led to the inception of the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire on 24 October 1883.

Started with a range of varied courses such as biology, history, Latin, astronomy, logic and many more, the University College aimed at preparing its students for examinations of the University of London or for further study at Oxford or Cambridge. A significant step was taken when the college moved towards gender equality. It was established by royal charter in 1884, allowing the enrollment of women and specifically forbidding religious tests for entry.

The journey to become an independent university was not an easy one. In 1888, the colleges united and sought a university charter for Wales. This led the way for the formation of the University of Wales in 1893. This new institution comprised of female faculty; Millicent Mackenzie, the first female associate professor in the UK, evolved into a full professor by 1910, thus setting a historical precedent.

A roadway to transformation was laid when Cardiff Corporation was persuaded to give up a five-acre site in 1901. Construction was initiated but hit a roadblock due to lack of funds. But after overcoming the hurdle, the college moved ahead full steam with their construction.

A historic moment arrived on 14th October 1909 when the “New College” in Cathays Park and the "Drapers' Library" was officially declared open in a grand ceremony. The "New College" is now known as the Main Building and despite the financial issues encountered during its construction, it stands tall as the heart of the university.

The University College Cardiff hit a financial snag in 1988 and to survive they merged with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) to form the University of Wales College of Cardiff. The principal of the new institution was Sir Aubrey Trotman-Dickenson who had been the principal of UWIST. Post a constitution change in 1996, it was renamed as the University of Wales, Cardiff.

Time rolled on and so did the growth charts of the college. After undergoing rabid changes, institutionalization of the Wales College of Medicine in 2005 was a significant step toward enhancing the quality of medical education. Running parallel to this was the university’s never-ending commitment to lifelong learning, proven by the Centre for Lifelong Learning that has been teaching an array of courses for over 125 years.

The progression of Cardiff University is an ongoing process. The University has been continuously spearheading in the research field with the launch of multiple research institutes in 2010. The journey of Cardiff University has been one of constant evolution, overcoming challenges, and a ceaseless pursuit of education excellence.
