Nestled smack in the cardiac region of Wales, the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama proudly sprouted and evolved into a global name since its inception in 1949. Fo' sure, this highly-acclaimed engine room of the Arts has enough drama and music in its timeline to make eyebrows happily dance!
Our journey kickstarts with Prince Charles, the nose in the air royalty himself, conferring the ‘Royal’ title on the college in 2001. Can you believe it? Our college made history overnight. It was the first time in more than a century a prince twiddled his thumbs and pencilled in a royal designation to a conservatoire - that too in Wales!
Ever since its inception in 1949, this college has blended the right vibes of tradition and modernism. Ya know, like an orchestra where a flute sings in harmony with an electric guitar. It was Sir Geraint Evans, a baritone singer, no less, who was responsible for weaving the curriculum. What's more, it wasn’t just another singer setting the tunes, it was a knight set on his steed galloping towards an educational revolution.
It was in 1973 that the music school and the drama school decided to exchange rings and take the vows to transform into a joint institution that is now known as RWCMD. This blessed union saw the light of the day under the guardian angel, Lord Fulton of Falmer. With this merger, the foundation was set for the soon-to-be cultural powerhouse of Wales.
This mega fusion took a spin again in 2004. Y'see, Cardiff University fluttered its eyelashes at RWCMD and "I Do's" were exchanged in a flash. This fruitful matrimonial alliance conceived an international blueprint that allowed the college to stretch its talented arms across continents. With its laurels swirling around, RWCMD was well beyond its toddler years!
The year 2011 witnessed yet another milestone in the RWCMD saga. It unveiled its face still fresh from a facelift costing £22.5 million. Yup, you heard it right, a transformation that lumped together a theatre, rehearsal studios, concert hall, and what not! All these furbished glories were sprinkled across a jaw-dropping area of 4.5 acres.
Our story sways a little and pirouettes to the emotional side here. In memory of the late Richard Burton, the college, with buckets of gratitude, named its headliner theatre after him in 2011. So now, every time young talents set their feet on the Richard Burton stage, they feel a sprinkle of his greatness.
Now, who would have thunk that this college, which began as a teensy-weensy dot in 1949, would snowball into an institution, a sanctuary for those desperately seeking the hallowed grounds of art- all the way in 2022! It basks in pride with 900 students from more than 60 countries swarming its corridors, learning under the best of the best. Think about it, a place far from home, where youngsters from all corners, including our very own India, have found a second home. Now ain't that a marvel!
It's safe to say, the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama knew the secret sauce to whipping up world-class pedagogy, ever since its inception. It had the volatile mixture of passion and dedication on a low simmer, gently sprinkled with innovation. And voila! What came out of the oven was more than just a college; it was, and still remains, a beacon of hope for students yearning to master the art of the dramatic and musical world.
Our college, folks, stands as a testament to the power of dreams, unity, and ambition. It carries forward a legacy etched in determination, culture, and relentless efforts. Here’s to our RWCMD, a tiny acorn in 1949 and a mighty oak in 2022!
