History University of South Wales

Let's speed up the time capsule and travel back to 1891. Welsh coal played a vital role in the British Empire's thriving economy, and it was this coalroaring era that saw the birth of the University of South Wales, but with a different name initially, the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines. An emblem of the nation's commitment to improving the technical knowledge of its workers, it was stashed right smack dab in the heart of the bustling mining district.

Whirling forward to 1912, the world had begun to shift gears from fossil fuels to electrical power, and talk about courteous timing, right? The college decided to jive with the times and expand its repertoire to include electrical, mechanical, civil, and mining engineering courses. Charles Compton, a dynamite English engineer, led those enriching lessons that encouraged our Indian mates to switch their turbans for an engineer’s hard hat.

Next up, we have the year 1967 - a year of flash and pizzazz. The school got itself a brand new name, which was preferential, seeing how the old one just wouldn't fit on the letterhead anymore: The University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST).

Then, amidst the Beatles craze in the 70's, the Cardiff College of Technology and Art and UWIST found themselves walking adjoined aisles. This union gave birth to a single institute that was known as the University of Wales College, Cardiff. A tarted-up version of its predecessor, this establishment offered more comprehensive courses for international studies, including our pals from India, eh?

As time zipped by, let's take a pit stop at 2004. The university packed up their bags and joined forces with the University of Glamorgan. They danced a jazzy little jig together and created a fully-integrated university that mattered.

2013 was a year to remember, a fusion of peacock-like splendour and educational magnificence. The University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport, decided to merge, opting for the grand name we now know as the University of South Wales. Since then, each year this sanctuary of knowledge has been illuminating students' paths, including our buddies from India, like the brightest Diwali lantern.

As the years glide past, the University of South Wales has adapted, grown, and transformed. With a student body size similar to the population of a small Indian city, the University now boasts more than 30,000 students from all walks of life and corners of the globe, including the subcontinent of India. This is all thanks to the esteemed faculty who've worked their socks off to safeguard the university's ethos. So, let’s doff our hats to these scholarly wizards, the true heroes of our tale.

Now, isn’t it exciting to think that adding on to this rich thread of history can be you, too? To hail from a land of myriad colours and spices and walk the hallways of a university that stood the test of time, now that's an adventure worth pursuing. An Indian adventure in Wales, how about that? And who knows, you might even end up putting chaat masala on your fish and chips!

So gear up, future historians, engineers, artists, and adventurers. There's a hearty welcome waiting for you amidst these ancient Welsh hills. Come, be part of this rollercoaster ride we call the history of the University of South Wales!
