Way back in 2007, a light bulb of an idea turned into a full-blown university. Fancy that, eh? Cool cats in the education world were cooking up something special and thus, the University of Cumbria came into existence. It’s not quite ancient history, this is modern academia we’re talking about.
Riding high on innovation, the founders, Graham Upton and John Moverley, were setting the pace for top-notch education. No more traditional tiny degrees that had done their time, these were air-smashing ideas ready to change the world. The university became the golden goose, incorporating St Martin's College in Lancaster, the Cumbria Institute of the Arts and the Cumbrian campuses of UCLAN. Now that’s three in one, like a potent combo of samosa, pakora, and jalebi!
In a jiffy, a couple of years post its establishment, our university started racking up honours like Virat Kohli hits centuries. By 2010, it became the first and only UK university to offer BASI trainer qualifications. Talk about hitting a six out of the park, right?
Mr Upton, our first Vice-Chancellor, was certainly a man with his plates of meat doing some serious walking, and not just his jaws flapping. Consider him the on-field captain, leading the forward march. He retired in 2010 but left his mark, starting strong traditions and leaving a legacy of new-fangled courses.
John Moverley kept the ball rolling, continuing the tradition and raising the stakes, no pun intended. By 2014, the university started housing international students, shining like a beacon of knowledge, attracting folks from far and wide. Grabbing the growth by its horns, the university was now ready to host the world.
Through rain or shine, UoC was evolving and not just in terms of size. It started bringing in programmes tailored for the times, making sure today's whiz kids became tomorrow's leaders. Nursing, teaching, business – you name it, they teach it. Innovation is the University's middle name, a phrase that’s pretty darn well stuck.
Buzz started around campus in 2018 when a £14.7 m health centre was added. It wasn't just about classrooms anymore, but initiating practical application of studies, preparing the students for the real world. Fast forward to today, the university houses over 10,000 students, each one as special as a chilli in a vindaloo.
So, how’s that for a trip down the memory lane? From a tiny idea in 2007, the University of Cumbria gave wings to its flight, welcoming flighty ideas and inventive brains. Because here, the only stupid question is the one not asked. Never forget that everyone is making it up as they go along!
Chase your dreams here, and who knows, you too could become a part of the history of the University of Cumbria. Because, the history of the university is still being written. And, the pen could very well be in your hand. Write your own destiny in this esteemed institution where history, undoubtedly, is a part of everyday life!
