Before we delve into what led to this, let's rewind back to 2008. Lampeter had just gone through a QAA assessment report. Yes, it confirmed their degrees were indeed valued, but there remained hesitation around their quality assurance systems. Limited confidence was the term used.
In response to this apprehension, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) got involved. Commissioning another report, they unraveled something alarming - prominent issues in leadership and management, the backbone of any educational institution! Talking about immediate effect, by December 2008, Lampeter found themselves in merger dialogues with Trinity.
Come April 2009, the lore of the big reveal was in the air. The new name, University of Wales, Trinity Saint David, was out. Only a month later, another merger with Coleg Sir Gâr, a further education college with five campuses across Carmarthenshire was announced.
