Let me take you back to the enchanting journey of Croydon College. Our story unfolds in 1868, with the founding of the School of Art, snuggled above the Public Halls in George Street. In the heart of County Borough of Croydon, around two decades later, in 1888, the friendly folk of the Croydon Corporation brought the Pitlake Technical Institute to life. Can you imagine the excitement when the institute first opened its doors to an eager crowd of 162 students?
Fast forward to 1929, and the Board of Education noticed a need for a state-of-the-art technical college to replace the Croydon Polytechnic, formerly called the Pitlake Technical Institute. By 1932, the council stepped forward, transforming the School of Art into the Croydon College of Art, sparking a new chapter in our tale.
However, the war years brought devastation. A tragic fire in 1941 severely damaged the Polytechnic school, causing a delay in plans for a new college. Finally, in 1948, the corporation was ready to start anew. They conceived a Development Plan for Further Education, and student enrolment swelled to over 4,000. Can you believe that?
The late 40s presented the vision of a united front - a technical college that would merge the Polytechnic and College of Art. Our journey sped along and in 1953, construction finally began at the college's present Fairfield site. The college embraced a new name - Croydon Technical College in 1955, subtly shifted to Croydon Technical College by 1974.
As the brand new college took shape, its walls echoed with voices of rebellion. June 1968 witnessed a six-day student protest, including the voices of Robin Scott, Malcolm McLaren, and Jamie Reid, who were all students back then. Now, that's some significant history to remember!
Moving towards recent decades, the college saw dynamic leadership under principals like Peter Phillips until 1994, followed by Vic Seddon (1995–2001) and Mariane Cavalli (2001 to 2010). Particularly noteworthy was Vic Seddon, the visionary behind the Croydon Higher Education Centre, fostering research and university degree activities in Croydon town.
Despite facing a rejection in their proposal for a formalised Croydon University College in 1999–2000, they soon rebounded. In November 2011, the college rejoiced as it received approval to be called University Centre Croydon (UCC). Caireen Mitchell joined the college's helm as CEO and principal in April 2018.

We swelled with pride as Croydon College became the first further education institution to win UNICEF's Rights Respecting Schools Award accreditation, a remarkable achievement bestowed by UNICEF UK.
