Circa 1856, we saw the birth of the Derby Diocesan Institution for the Training of Schoolmistresses, dedicated to maturing objectives under several nomenclatures for approximately 120 years. Its distinct individual journey beautifully merged with another growing educational stream, resulting in the creation of the Derby Lonsdale College of Higher Education in 1977.
Equally important to the university's history was the trajectory of the Derby School of Art born in 1853. A bit of nomenclature mix-up followed, and in 1885, it graciously transformed into the Derby School of Art and Technical Institution.
