Durham University

Founded ahead of only two other historic British institutions, Oxford and Cambridge, Durham University boasts an illustrious heritage. Spread between locations in Durham and Stockton, the university operates through a distinctive collegiate system comprising 16 unique colleges. Each college functions as a self-governing entity, with its own set of internal regulations and traditions, cultivating a vibrant, diverse, and self-contained academic community. The core academic focus of Durham University is centred around sociology, however, it also presents avenues for studying fundamental scientific disciplines. Unlike most universities where cohorts range in the thousands, Durham’s colleges individually admit between 300 to 900 students each year, promoting a close-knit, personal learning experience. This venerable institution is recognised as one of the top three in the country according to national rankings, slotting in just behind Oxford and Cambridge. Moreover, Durham University holds an impressive track record of success, with many of its alumni achieving significant recognition in their respective fields.

Visiting Durham University as a student, one immediately remarks on the richness of tradition and the sense of identity each college embodies. This collegiate structure, besides imparting an intimate, personalised education, also seeds a powerful sense of belonging and camaraderie among students. The institution's core emphasis on sociological disciplines, coupled with opportunities to venture into hard sciences, caters to a wide spectrum of academic interests and allows students to tailor their learning journey. As a bonus perk, the Durham campus is a tourist hot spot thanks to its picturesque castle that bears the charm of the 19th century and is a primary filming locale for Harry Potter movies. Ranked among the top three institutions in the UK, enrolling at Durham is an assurance of world-class education, setting you up for remarkable recognition in your chosen field.

History Durham University

Let's begin our journey in the late 13th century, around 1286-1291, when Durham University was but a dream residing within the dedicated hearts of Benedictine monks from Durham. They courageously set up a hall at none other than Oxford University, hailing it as their beacon of knowledge. The hall transformed into the esteemed Durham College in 1381, thanks to a generous endowment from Thomas Hatfield, the Bishop of Durham.

Fast forward to 1545 and witness a dramatic pivot point. The Reformation influenced Durham College to surrender to the Crown. But did that dim the scholarly spirit of Durham? Not a bit - its robust tradition in theological teaching inspired efforts directed at forming a university within the city. Attempts were notably made under King Henry VIII and then Oliver Cromwell, who even nominated a proctor and fellows for setting up a college in 1657.

Your logical curiosity might lead to ask, surely these initiatives would have succeeded? Nonetheless, opposition from Oxford and Cambridge Universities led to the dismissal of this ambitious project upon the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. The noble quest of Durham to establish its university thus comes across as a compelling tale of resilience and ambition.

Finally, under the initiative of Archdeacon Charles Thorp and the support of the Bishop of Durham, William van Mildert, the parliament passed an act in 1832. The act - with the rather complex title of "an Act to enable the Dean and Chapter of Durham Cathedral to appropriate part of the property of their church to the establishment of a University in connection therewith" - breathed life into the dream. The university attained royal assent from King William IV on 4th July 1832 and opened its doors to the world on 28th October 1833.

Next, we're transported to 1835, when a groundbreaking statute was passed. This secured the place of Durham degrees among the most revered in the country and paved the way for setting up Convocation. However, Durham degrees were exclusive to members of the Church of England. For aspiring international students, this might seem a limiting criterion, but it was a norm of the time, till the ground rules began to shift.

By the mid-19th century, an essential amendment was made. Durham degrees were no longer subject to a religious test, paving the way for diverse learners. Although it is amusing to note that the Church of England membership was still required for staff and members of Convocation, till the implementation of the Universities Tests Act of 1871. A supplemental charter eventually permitted women students to formally graduate, commencing from 1899.

Now imagine the sprawling Durham landscape dotted with numerous colleges. Expansion into Newcastle in 1852 was a significant stride. The addition of Armstrong College in 1904, St John's College in 1909, and several other colleges led to a sharp rise in enrolment. The university was a thriving academic hub, outgrowing its original borders.

Let's not forget the noteworthy global connections Durham developed. It established affiliations with Codrington College, Barbados in 1875, and Fourah Bay College, Sierra Leone in 1876, becoming the very first English University to venture into such partnerships. This landmark move was viewed with scepticism by certain quarters, illustrating the resistance to change prevalent then.

Fast forwarding to the most recent times, Durham has been demonstrating an unparalleled growth trajectory, fostering international relationships, establishing numerous colleges, and championing research-led education. Despite its fair share of criticism, most notably between 2010 and 2012 for receiving funds from questionable sources, this fascinating university continues to stand tall after centuries of evolution and expansion.

As we end our journey, the philosophy of Durham that strikes us is its relentless pursuit for excellence. With its ten-year strategy announced in 2017 planning to invest £700m in enhancing the campus, and adding 300 new academic posts, it remains steadfast on its march toward the future. Its alumni stand testament to its unyielding commitment to academic excellence and its vibrant history is a testament to its adaptability and resilience. Can you picture yourself being part of its journey toward an even brighter future?
