The focus was to shape promising women into excellent teachers. Later, in 1963, the college welcomed men into its academic family too! You might find it interesting that this institution was recognized as a residence hall at the prestigious Durham University from 1924 right up until its merger in 1977.
Now, let's throw some light on the other key player, Durham Technical College which sprung up in 1957 in Framwellgate Moor. Its birth was inspired by the desire to offer valuable support to the mining industry - consequently, the initial curriculum was heavily focused on engineering and construction. Maintaining the legacy of Neville's Cross College, the newly formed New College Durham continued to offer teacher training degrees until 1986. Both the institutions were now operating from two main sites until 2004 - the historic Neville's Cross site and the industrially rich Durham Technical College site at Framwellgate Moor. Interestingly, the latter was the heart of further education provision (FE), while the former fostered higher education (HE) provision.
Here's a notable twist, dear reader; both sites were in need of refurbishment. The decision makers or let's just call them the 'academic architects' - the Board of Governors took a significant decision. They envisioned nurturing educational excellence on a single, modern campus. Their dreams soon saw the light of day when in 2002, they received approval to construct a £37 million campus, which opened doors for students in 2005.
Talking about 1999–2000, New College Durham proudly sewed in a big number of learners into its academic fabric. With 8,270 FE students (1,877 full-time) and 1,934 HE students (675 full-time), the college had a substantial role to play in shaping bright futures. It continued to house Business and management studies at Neville's Cross until 2004.
In 2011, a big feather adorned the college's hat. It became one among only two institutions in the country to be granted Foundation Degree Awarding Powers.
