It was the year 1875, a time when women's access to higher education was scant. But two women, Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson, members of the Edinburgh Ladies' Educational Association, dared to challenge this norm. They founded The Edinburgh School of Cookery and Domestic Economy, a women-only institution. The vision they held was twofold, to enhance women's access to higher education and elevate the dietary habits of working-class families.
The learning began in an exquisite setting! Can you imagine, it was the Royal Museum, where the teaching was initially delivered! But they weren't confined to the museum alone. They also indulged nationwide audiences with lectures and demonstrations. By 1877, this noble School secured a base at Shandwick Place in Haymarket.
Fast-track to 1891, the School had grown by bounds and leaps, and it took a step further. It shifted to Atholl Crescent, expanding the breadth of its courses, making room for residential students. It was also then, HRH Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll bestowed the honor of being Patron of the institution. She served in this noble capacity until her demise in 1939.
Now, let's meet Ethel De la Cour. In 1909, she took the helm of the esteemed institution as the first Principal after the School was decorated as a Central Institution under the Scottish Education Department's purview. But that's not the only transition that happened in 1930. The School morphed its identity to the Edinburgh College of Domestic Science.
Let's take you to 1961. The college made a historic property acquisition, buying a part of the Clermiston estate. Known as the Corstorphine campus, it was inaugurated by the esteemed HRH Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, who took over as the Patron in 1940 until her life's end. Also, here, the story takes an exciting turn; in 1972, the name you all love, Queen Margaret, emerged, dissociating the college from the restrictive field of domestic science.
In the years that followed, the college burgeoned its range of courses, especially in dramatic arts and paramedical healthcare fields. And to inform you about the rich legacy of Queen Margaret, it has absorbed several institutions since its inception.
Now, let's fast forward to 1992, a milestone year! Queen Margaret College earned the prerogative to grant its own taught degrees by the Privy Council. Six years later, in 1998, the college was empowered to bestow its own research and higher degrees. Hence, the prestigious name Queen Margaret University College took birth in January 1999.
However, the story doesn't end here. After achieving the crucial threshold of 5000 students, the institution finally, in January 2007, became what we know now as Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.
But wait, there's more! In 2012, it earned a unique distinction. Queen Margaret University became the first educational institution in Scotland to own a Business Gateway on campus.
Indeed, QMU has now become a symbolic institution in Scotland's educational landscape. It was in May 2010 that Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, announced that QMU would host the archives for Homecoming Scotland 2009, a testament to the university's significance in the Scottish heritage.
