Our University of Exeter adventure begins way back in the swanky twenty-something of the last century, 1922 to be exact, where Mr. Albert Kahn, a wealthy entrepreneur with a heart as big as his pocket, coughed up the dough to build the place. His aim? To foster international understanding, a vision that still pulses in the heart of Exeter today.
Who knew, right? This town, known for its cobbled streets and quaint English charm was about to become an educational powerhouse. Back then, the number of students wasn't even in the hundreds, can you believe it? Now, it's a vibrant community of more than 22,000 youngsters from all walks of life.
The 1950s, ah, the era of Elvis and poodle skirts. Exeter was rocking and rolling too, bagging itself university status in 1955, holding her head high among the other UK universities. It ticked off another milestone in the sixties with brand spanking new campuses in Cornwall and Devon.
Come the 80s, most Indian parents might remember, Michael Jackson's Thriller was blaring from every radio, and Exeter was dancing to its own beat. The university started to welcome more international students with open arms. It felt like every kid from India to Indonesia was packing their bags for Exeter.
The turn of the millennium marked a bricktastic achievement - Exeter having built-up a whopping 200 million pounds worth of new facilities. Libraries, sports arenas, you name it, they had it. By 2005, they were rubbing shoulders with the biggies, grinning from ear to ear, part of the Russell Group of research-intensive UK universities.
Oh, the past decade? It’s been fab. They’re committed as ever to Old Albert’s belief in international understanding. A swishy new Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies was unveiled in 2010, a place for east to meet west and share a good cup of chai. In 2012, its reputation shot skywards. The Queen, yep, you heard right, Her Majesty herself gave her seal of approval. With that, Exeter sauntered into the UK’s top 10 universities.
So here we are, nearly a century after freewheeling Albert had a dream. A uni bustling with bright sparks from 130 countries, a place where rich cultural exchanges and academic brilliance come together. From 1922 till date, it's been a wild ride and it's showing no signs of slowing down.
So pack your bags, kids! The unassuming city of Exeter in deepest Devon is calling you to be part of its story. Bright-eyed, eager, and ready for the ride, India? Exeter, here we come!
