History University of the West of Scotland

In an era when the Industrial Revolution was reshaping the world, Paisley, the future home of the University of West Scotland (UWS), gained prominence for thread weaving. At its nucleus were two brothers, Peter and Thomas Coats. Raised in the glow of the Scottish Enlightenment, they were steeped in liberal ideals. Well-known philanthropists, the brothers were pillars of the Philosophical Institution, which came to life in 1808.

Guess what they did next? They generously donated a museum and a library to Paisley, funded the construction of the Coats observatory, and more importantly, advocated for education far and wide. 1836 marked the birth of the School of Arts, thanks to the efforts of the Philosophical Institution. Fast forward a decade, and this school had evolved into a Government School of Design, in line with 19 similar institutions sprouting across the UK.

With their primary goal to enhance the quality of product design through industry-centered education, these schools were the trailblazers of that time. Leading the charge was none other than Peter Coats. He wore different hats, one as the director of Paisley Philosophical Institution and another as the head of the Government School of Design. Over time, these schools underwent name changes transforming into Schools of Art and then again as Schools of Art and Science.

The dawn of 1897 was a momentous event. Princess Louise, the Duchess of Argyll, begraced Paisley with her presence to lay the foundation stone of a grand new building for the college. Fun fact? The architectural blueprint of that structure emerged as the victor in a design competition and received part-funding from local industrialists Peter Brough and Thomas Coats.

As the 20th century unrolled, the place came to be known as Paisley Technical College and School of Art. It celebrated its centennial year as an education hub for the University of London External Programme. A standout principal from this period was Lewis Fry Richardson, who led the institute from 1922 to 1940. A man of many talents, Richardson made a profound impact in various fields - mathematics, physics, meteorology, psychology, and peace initiatives. His pioneering work in modern mathematical methods for weather forecasting and studying warfare patterns was nothing short of revolutionary.

Twists and turns marked the journey of the college throughout the first 50 years of the 1900s. After World War II, the state recognized it as a Central Institution. While this status came with consistent funding, it also necessitated shutting down the school of Art, transferring its students to Glasgow School of Art. The institution then took on a new name - Paisley College of Technology.

Fast forward to the 1990s, when Paisley College attained the status of a university, propelling it to merge with Craigie College of Education in Ayr. This merger led to the inclusion of nursing colleges around town. And thus, began a new chapter with the establishment of the University of Paisley.

However, the story doesn't end there. In 2007, the University of Paisley fused with Bell College, Hamilton, and emerged as the University of the West of Scotland. This renaming was met with resistance from Paisley, who saw it as a disregard for tradition and the ties that connected the university to the town. Despite the opposition, today, the University of the West of Scotland is home to over 15,000 students and stands tall as one of Scotland's largest 'new universities'.

So, here it stands today, the University of the West of Scotland, a monument to perseverance, growth, and the ever-evolving nature of education. Whether you attend campus in Paisley, Ayr, Lanarkshire, or anywhere else this esteemed university has planted its roots, you become a part of this rich, fascinating history.
