Fast forward to 1956, and Battersea was reborn as the Battersea College of Technology, being one of the first institutions to receive the "College of Advanced Technology" designation. As the sixties dawned, Battersea had overgrown its shell in London and aimed higher, setting sights on Guildford for a larger campus. That period also saw the Robbins Report of 1963 suggesting that Battersea and similar colleges should evolve into degree-awarding universities.
By 1965, what we now identify as the University of Surrey was beginning to sprout, securing a greenfield site in Guildford for its new home. Courtesy of Guildford Cathedral, Guildford Borough Council, and the Onslow Village Trust, the university's future was charted. On 9th September 1966, the University of Surrey was officially established. Amid this flurry of development, a musical treat awaited the visitors in October 1968 as the iconic band Led Zeppelin took to the stage for their first gig at the Battersea campus.
Transferring completely to Guildford by 1970, the university paid homage to its roots by naming its halls of residence Battersea Court. It continued to cement its place in Guildford through the 1980s, becoming a trustee of the Guildford Institute's building and bringing university education to the heart of the city. Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1991 marked a significant milestone, honored by Roy Douglas' book "Surrey – The Rise of a Modern University" and a Service of Thanksgiving attended by Queen Elizabeth II.
In the late nineties, the Roehampton Institute was welcomed into the academic federation of the University of Surrey. By 2004, Roehampton had earned its independent university title, ending its partnership with Surrey. The year 2002 heralded the university's 35th anniversary with grand events and the unveiling of The Surrey Scholar sculpture, a gift to the people of Guildford.
