History The Royal Veterinary College

The story of The Royal Veterinary College starts in the heart of London way back in 1791. Yep, you heard it right, the 18th century! Mr. Samuel Marshal, a surgeon and apothecary, had the grand idea of opening a vet school. Marshal became the founding father of the college, pioneering courses in anatomy and the diseases of animals in England for the first time.

Hustling and bustling, Marshal and his team of expert surgeons began teaching local and international students on borrowed premises in Camden Town. Quite a start, right? By the way, Camden! An ever vibrant town with its iconic market! Little did they know then that this was going to be the seed for one of the world's best Vet schools.

And the growth rolls on. The college hitched a significant upgrade in 1875, obtaining its Royal Charter. Woah! Talk about getting an ornate feather in the cap! Queen Victoria herself marked it as "The Royal Veterinary College". Hats off to Queen Victoria's wise judgement, I must say.

Then the 20th century came knocking, bringing along a state-of-the-art teaching hospital equation. It was 1958 when the Hawkshead Campus was established, including that major biggie, the first Veterinary Teaching Hospital. If we're talking grand, it doesn't get any bigger than this!

The college didn't stop there, no sir. In 1990, it took a giant leap for vet-kind, establishing the first farm animal clinical centre in the UK. Farmers of the UK could now breathe easy, knowing that expert care for their livestock was just a phone call away.

In the last ten years, the college took full advantage of the digital revolution. It started offering interactive courses and programs online, making it even more accessible globally, including for our pals back home in India.

The past decade has seen the college scale even greater heights as a leader in veterinary medicine and education. In fact, in 2019, it ranked as one of the top three vet schools worldwide. How's that for a topper's score!

Well, that's the tale of The Royal Veterinary College. From makeshift classrooms in Camden Town to a world-renowned, top-ranking institution. Oh, what an inspiring journey! Doesn't this make you want to jot down a history of your own here?

That's the end of the story, for now! Can't wait to see where The Royal Veterinary College heads next. As they say, "the sky's the limit"!

Now you see, history doesn't have to be dry and drab. Sometimes, it's just a fun-filled story waiting to be told, isn’t it?
