History University of Hertfordshire

Envisage a time in the past, where a verdant expanse of 90 acres in Roe Green, Hatfield, caught the keen eye of Alan Butler, the chairman of a significant aircraft company. That's where our narrative really takes off as he bequeathed this land for the higher purpose of education in 1944. This visionary move set in motion an interesting journey, leading to the birth of what we now recognize as the University of Hertfordshire.

Fast-forward to 1948, the construction of the institution kicked off, under the watchful eye of principal W.A.J Chapman. By the time Spring 1952 made its appearance, the college prided itself on a total strength of 99 teachers. Things got a royal touch when, in December 1952, Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh took centre stage to formally inaugurate the Hatfield Technical College.

Over time, the college expanded its scope, rebranding itself as Hatfield College of Technology in 1958. Not failing to nurse the future of technology, a rather hefty sum of £ 29,201 fattened their asset column as they bought a digital computer in 1962. This strategic purchase was pivotal in establishing computer science as a distinct degree in the institution.

In 1969, the institution experienced another evolution as it was awarded the title of 'Hatfield Polytechnic.' Fast-forward to 1977, and an audience of international students made up more than ten per cent out of 4000 students attending the Polytechnic. The next couple of years carried the legacy forward as John Illston, in 1982, succeeded Sir Norman Lindop and added a sports hall to the Hatfield Campus by 1984.

Owing to its dedication for academic excellence, in 1988, Hatfield Polytechnic coloured its credibility with shades of accreditation from the Council for National Academic Awards. By the end of the following year, it even reached corporate status. Now, if you think that's compelling, wait until you read what happened next.

Proclaiming their ambition loud and clear to become a university was easier said than done. In 1991 the news that polytechnics were to be abolished struck harder than a thunderbolt. Yet, rather than backing down, Hatfield Polytechnic kept its eyes upon the stars. By the time 1992 arrived, the dream encapsulated in those ambitious whispers had indeed manifested as the University of Hertfordshire.

Ever since its inception, the university has been expanding and evolving, consistently making proactive decisions towards betterment. A true example of this was when it took the first step towards alleviating medical education, training, and research in the region by establishing the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School.

Fast forward to the present day, the University has been pushing boundaries in various dimensions. They make headlines in 2020 for a record-breaking eight-year-long exposure photograph by their Master's student, Regina Valkenborgh. Today, it is known for fostering intellectual depth, professionalism, and employability among students, serving as a perfect global educational hub. Indeed, the journey of the University of Hertfordshire is worth marvelling at even as you, an international student, consider your future educational pursuits.
