Ardleigh House didn't begin its journey as an educational institution right away. Instead, it wore the hats of a community and youth centre and a hub for part-time day release courses. While the resources and facilities were elementary and confined only to the upper floor, these humble beginnings laid the foundation for what was to come.
As time progressed, Ardleigh House expanded. Two additional classrooms sprung up, bringing with them ample storage space. It was during this phase that the local authority Further Education Committee began to envision a more extensive establishment. They named it ‘Ardleigh House Centre for Further Education’ and planned for an assembly hall and craft workshops.
In a significant move, funds were approved in 1949 to cater to an ambitious expansion plan. The committee aimed to create an additional 14,000 square feet of space to accommodate administration, teaching facilities, and communal spaces. The target student population? An impressive 400.
Fast-forward to 1958, and we witnessed the ascent of A. W. Ebdon, who took over the reins as the second warden of 'Ardleigh House Centre for Further Education'. Not just that, Ebdon saw the completion of the new facilities and stepped into the shoes of the first principal when the institution was renamed – Hornchurch College of Further Education.
The 1970s marked an era of commitment and drive to improve training standards. However, the college faced a constant roadblock – the lack of space. The solution came in the form of the Quarles School site in Harold Hill, which absorbed the institution, resolving its space conundthere seriously.
The '90s witnessed yet another milestone in the college’s history. In 1992, the institution incorporated with its present-day name - Havering College of Further and Higher Education.
