When it comes to architectural glories and lofty educational ambitions, Hull College in the heart of Hull city stands out, proudly under the wings of the highly-regarded Hull College Group. This education institution, in its three strategically located centres in Queen's Gardens, Cannon Street, and the Steve Prescott Centre, has a deeply etched history worth exploring.
Picture this! An eight-story tower block, piercing the sky, a classic display of the 1950s brutalist architecture, nestling Queen's Gardens, which is essentially the nerve-centre of Hull College's educational offering. And guess what, this is not just any building! It's the result of a generous £11 million funding, shared by Yorkshire Forward and the Learning and Skills Council. Opened in 2004, this extension is a busy hub, featuring a learning resource centre.
What adds an intriguing element to this colossal structure is an anecdote from the past. While laying the foundation stone in 2003, a humble time capsule found its resting place in the foundation. Now, imagine a smaller yet significant structure standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the tower block that goes by the name- the Wilberforce.
The year 2012 brought a transformation to the Wilberforce. From being a standard building, it emerged as the Hull Studio School, serving educational purposes till school's closure in 2014, post which, it donned the avatar of a home for classrooms for further education courses. This venue is a true testament to Hull's art and design brilliance, thanks to the Hull School of Art and Design – an institution founded way back in 1861.
Adjacent to the towering central block, the school finds a comfortable abode in 1970s buildings, which were offering Art and Design courses at the Hull College's former Park Street site until June 2016. And amidst the ongoing hustle-bustle, it's impossible to miss the presence of a 102-foot (31 m) Greek Doric column-adorned monument in the Queen's Gardens grounds, honouring the legendary politician William Wilberforce.
However, the course of Hull's history wasn't always smooth. The year 2009 promised a massive £80 million reconstruction plan for the college buildings, which was unfortunately stalled by the British Government. The overall vision involved the demolition of the primary tower block coupled with the introduction of state-of-the-art facilities including laboratories, salons, kitchens, sports centre and workshops. Sadly, the plans came to a premature end in July 2010.
Moving forward in time to November 2014, when Hull College Group had an encounter with the University of Hull Scarborough campus, which was providing higher education in Scarborough since 2000. Despite the initial enthusiasm, January 2016 revealed a shocking turn of events as Hull College decided to withdraw from buying the campus citing poor student recruitment.
Let's not underestimate the resilience of Hull College for it carried its educational mission. An Ofsted report in November 2015 rated Hull College ‘good’ for its overall effectiveness, further boosting its morale. Consequently, the college was included under the prestigious umbrella of the Collab Group of high-performing further education institutions, and in June 2017, received a Bronze rating under the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
August 2019 witnessed Harrogate College being transferred to Luminate Education Group formerly known as Leeds City College Group. Following this, the year has been replete with some crests and troughs, and currently, the college is under investigation over potential financial mismanagement and nepotism allegations. But despite all these, Hull College's spirit remains unscathed – its dedication to providing quality education continues to shine bright.
