Picture this: It's the year 1779, and Sir Joseph Banks, a man passionate about science, decides to make Spring Grove House in Isleworth his main residence. A right choice because it later becomes a part of the renowned West Thames College. He eventually bought the freehold of the house in 1808, enthusiastically engaging in scientific explorations right in the house's sprawling gardens. The place was so majestic that even Queen Charlotte couldn't resist a visit in 1813.
But let's rewind a bit. Around 1645, the first-ever home was built on this very site. Elisha Biscoe, a businessman of means, bought the property in 1754, but he decided to demolish the existing house to create Spring Grove House. When he passed away, his son didn't want to let go of this architectural wonder and leased it out to none other than Sir Banks.
Now, fast forward a little, and the house, a marvel in itself, saw major reconstruction and extensions. The mid to late 19th century was a period of transformation under Henry Pownall and Andrew Pears, with excellent examples of late Victorian architecture and interior design becoming visible. The house even flaunted a brilliant Georgian room. The ground floor rooms went through a carefully executed restoration and redecoration in 2011.
1922 marked a turning point for the house as it was bought by Middlesex County Council. You still with me? Good. The same year, Spring Grove House transformed into the physical embodiment of Hounslow Polytechnic (renamed Spring Grove Polytechnic), which had started in 1892 and had occupied premises on Hanworth Road. Sharing this historic building were students from Spring Grove Secondary School, who moved here in the following year. The Polytechnic was reserved for evening classes.
Change was in the air yet again in 1946 when Spring Grove Secondary School transmuted into Spring Grove Grammar School. But by 1959, they relocated to Lampton, making way for Isleworth Polytechnic to become the primary tenant of the Spring Grove House. The house served as a full-time college, quite a leap from its humble beginnings, don't you think?
The fusion of Isleworth and Chiswick polytechnics led to another transition, culminating in the launch of Hounslow Borough College in 1976. Then in 1993, another milestone was marked with the college gaining incorporated status and adopting a new name, West Thames College.
Can you imagine? All of this transpired within the premises of the resplendent Spring Grove House. Indeed, this majestic Victorian mansion, rich in educational lineage, not only serves as a testament to its engaging history but also opens its doors to the public every September as part of Open House London. A story of transition, legacy, education and a robust testament to the times, don't you agree?
