Once upon a time, back in 1881, there was a small, but oh-so ambitious college in Scotland by the name of The University College, Dundee. This energetic little acorn had the desire to become a mighty academic oak.
The big push came from a squeaky, wee woman known as Mary Ann Baxter of Balgavies. She dreamt larger than her petite frame and wished for an educational institution in Dundee that (and here’s the interesting bit) both gents and ladies can attend! In the 19th century! Scandalous!
So, Miss Baxter, along with the George Duncan, a local merchant, spilled out the princely sum of £120,000 – the largest donation ever made to a British university at that time. And, you know what they say, no money, no honey!
The following years saw this ambitious idea steadily grow into an educational giant. Our humble acorn 'University College, Dundee' bloomed into a part of the University of St Andrews in 1890. The parivartan (change) in name seemed to bring along some good karma (luck)!
Just a skip, hop and a jump forward to 1954, and Dundee starts strutting its stuff! It was granted an independent charter and became the fourth ancient university of Scotland. How’s that for a meteoric rise?
The year 1967 saw Dundee finally growing some wings and become a fully independent University. No longer overshadowed by its big brother, the University of St Andrews, it was the moment Dundee had been preparing for more than a century!
The following years have seen Dundee stand tall and strong, with a respectable reputation globally. Heck, it ranked 29th in The Guardian’s University Guide 2021, ahead of universities like Oxford and Cambridge in certain subjects.
The motto of the University of Dundee, “Magnificat anima mea dominum" is sure to give you the feels. Translated as "My spirit magnifies the Lord", the motto resonates with Dundee’s belief in nurturing not just the mind, but the spirit of its students. A real pavitra (pure) approach, wouldn’t you agree?
With more than 17,000 students from over 140 countries strolling through its corridors, The University of Dundee is a truly diverse and international institution. It's a proper masala mix of cultures, and they’d love a dash of spicy Indian intellect in there too!
To wrap up, Dundee is no longer the tiny acorn we talked about, but a full-fledged University, holding an admirable place in the world of education. Now, if that doesn’t make you proud to be a part of this fantastic University, I’m not sure what will! Dundee is naan less than a curry, a fulsome blend of academics and character.
