Let's hop onto a time machine, and whisk ourselves back to the 19th century. The year? 1828. That's when the foundation stone of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) was laid. It might surprise you, but, back then they called it 'The Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge'. Our guess? Probably to show off to the folks in the UK about how up-to-date and cultured they were, eh?
Now, fast-forward to 1984. 'The Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge' had morphed into Preston Polytechnic. A name with a bit more zing, don't you reckon? Here's the catch; five short years later in 1989, they decided to jazz things up a notch and renamed it as Lancashire Polytechnic. We know, we know. The British do have a proclivity for changing names!
The turn of the millennium brought another facelift for the university. It was in the year 2002 that the institution received the official stamp to be called the University of Central Lancashire. Imagine, one little university– three different names! Kinda like a celebrity, eh?
Over the years, UCLan has evolved into a magnificent academic institution, and from humble beginnings has transformed into a prestigious university with over 180 years of heritage. Grandeur aside, the University also prides itself as being - now, get this - the first modern university to be recognized in the QS World Rankings. That's as good as saying, "Mom, I aced the physics test!" We kid, we kid!
Let's not forget the people who played a crucial role in putting the UCLan on the global map. An honorable mention goes to Sir Richard Evans, who, as the vice-chancellor, catapulted the university's position in the national and international education circuit. If Sir Richard was the captain of the ship, Prof. Mike Thomas and his entourage sure knew how to steer the ship in the right direction, solidifying the reputation of UCLan as a university of repute.
As of today, UCLan is home to a whopping 35,000 students. That's as many as army ants in a colony! What makes this university unique? It offers over 400 undergraduate programs and 200 postgraduate courses. Sounds as exciting as attending an amusement park, but with books, doesn't it?
One last thing, before we wrap up our little history lesson. While you spend your time mugging up chemistry equations and understanding Shakespeare (Oh, the horror!), the students at UCLan are probably getting a kick out of aerial dance performances in between their regular classes. Yep, you heard right, aerial dance classes! Who knew university life could be loaded with adrenaline too?
So, there you have it, the University of Central Lancashire in all its glory and eccentricity. You'd agree, a university's history isn't all snooze-fest, is it now?
