History Lancaster University

Let's embark on a journey back in time, right between 1958 and 1961, when the landscape of education was rapidly changing in the United Kingdom. In this whirlwind of transformation, seven new "plate glass" universities sprung up in all their grandeur, and amongst them, Lancaster University was chosen as the fourth to be established. The echoes of this announcement on 23rd November 1961 resounded far and wide.

Fast forward to 1964, the university was enshrined with the royal charter, with Princess Alexandra of Kent gracing the throne as the first chancellor. 1964 was also marked by a grand inauguration ceremony jubilant with the bestowing of honorary degrees on several distinguished personalities including the then Prime Minister, Harold Wilson.

Not much can rival longevity with grace, something Princess Alexandra exemplified effortlessly. Her reign as the chancellor of Lancaster University was marked by a record; she was indeed the longest-serving chancellor of any British University till she retired in 2004. She left the legacy of the Chancellor's Medal, awarded for academic merit to the standout undergraduates and postgraduates.

Now, imagine the university’s first-ever student intake in October 1964, a buzzing cohort of knowledge seekers guided by 13 eminent professors, supported by 32 additional members of teaching and research staff, 8 library staff, and 14 administrators. The university from then on thrived on the motto "patet omnibus veritas", which translates to "Truth lies open to all", a sentiment that resonates even now.

The dawn of 1965 marked a significant moment when Lancaster University welcomed its first batch of science students. As the students began their enlightening journey, the makers of the university were hard at work, setting up a befitting infrastructure.

Initial days saw the university nestle within the city itself. The Centenary Church, gracefully aging from the time it was a former Congregational church, was now a lecture theatre and housed the university’s first Junior Common Room. To accommodate the influx of students, the quaint town of Morecambe opened its arms.

As a testament to their foresight, Lancaster University established two colleges as its primary education boards, Bowland and Lonsdale. Every staff and student identified with one of these, setting the stage for an engaging academic rivalry and bonding. The first-ever students stepping into their residential quarters in October 1968 was a sight to behold, indeed.

From those blessed beginnings within the city, the university gradually transitioned to its new campus at Bailrigg between 1966 and 1970. As they say, change indeed is the only constant, and Lancaster University successfully evolved with time.

Growth continued and in 2014; the 50th anniversary of Lancaster University was a grand jubilee. Through the year, the air was abuzz with events involving alumni, students, staff, and even members of the local community. And so, a rich tradition marched on, marking its memorable place in history.
