Who would have thought that a Mechanics' Institute, established in 1824 for providing staff with further education, would become the esteemed Leeds Beckett University that stands today? But, you know, great things often start in unexpected places.
Back in 1868, that Mechanics' Institute was rebranded to The Leeds Institute of Science, Art and Literature. A mouthful, right? But then, who wouldn't want to study in an institution that sounds so jolly smart?
Fast-forward to 1908, and bigwigs John Barran, Alfred Orage, and William Gaunt, all legends in their own rights, restructured the Institute into Leeds College of Technology. After all, change is the only way forward, ain't it?
Now, if you think that's where the story ends, you're mistaken. Y'know, life's like a roller-coaster, full of ups and downs, and the same goes for our University. Amidst World War II havoc, in 1949, Leeds College of Technology joined hands with Leeds College of Art and Leeds School of Commerce to form Leeds Colleges of Technology, Art, and Commerce.
