History University of Leeds

Picture this, in the bustling city of Leeds, during the Victorian era, the atmosphere was charged with advancement and innovation as the city was growing into an international centre for the textile industry and clothing manufacture. In the midst of this hive of activity, in 1831, the seeds for the University of Leeds were sown with the establishment of the Leeds School of Medicine. The goal was to provide quality medical education to the public. But is that all the story? No dear reader, there’s more to it.

Zoom forward to the year 1880, and the narrative takes another turn. Here we're introduced to the much-acclaimed Victoria University, which emerged in Manchester. Instead of elevating the then-prevalent Owens College to a university, the government made a different move. They opted to establish Victoria University as a federal institution in the North of England with Owens College as its sole component from 1880 till 1884.

Showing its determination to expand, in 1887, Yorkshire College became the third milestone to mark its spot on the Victoria University trail. Meanwhile back in Leeds, in 1874, the Yorkshire College of Science was born. Created to provide education for middle-class children of industrialists and merchants, it thrived with ample financial support from the local industry.

With a progressive curriculum that included experimental physics, mathematics, geology, mining, chemistry, and biology, the Yorkshire College of Science gained international recognition. Notably, its faculty won acclaim for studies on engineering and textile technology – a tribute to the thriving manufacturing and textile trades of the West Riding region. With the addition of classics, modern literature and history to their portfolio, the school later became simply "The Yorkshire College."

Just a decade later, in 1884, a pivotal moment arrived. The Yorkshire College absorbed the Leeds School of Medicine and on 3rd November 1887, it joined the federal Victoria University. Students were then awarded degrees by the University of London signifying an important leap in the evolution of higher education in Leeds.

The saga took a more inclusive trajectory when Leeds joined the Victoria University on 3rd November 1887. Unlike Owens College, Leeds had always welcomed women. However, it was only in 1896, when the Day Training College laid out special facilities that women began attending in significant numbers. Hannah Robertson, a woman of high regard, was offered an unprecedented salary of £400 per annum to encourage more female enrolment in 1904.

Fast forward to 1903, and the universities started craving independence. Following the granting of a royal charter and an act of Parliament, the University of Liverpool began the fragmentation of Victoria University. Leeds was hot on their heels and gained independence, granted by king Edward VII in 1904. Finally, the Victoria University was renamed as the Victoria University of Manchester in 2004.

Over time, Leeds University has made significant contributions. With over 2,000 student volunteers and 8,700 staff, it not only stood as the third largest employer in Leeds as of 2019–20 but also contributed around £1.23bn a year to the local economy. It nurtures around 36,840 students as of 2022, with tuition fees averaging at £9,250 (~$12,000–12,500) per year.

So, dear reader, if you're considering Leeds as your potential study destination, you're contemplating a piece of history that has not only adapted and transformed over the years, but also remains deeply rooted in its ambitious beginnings. From a single school of medicine to being named University of the Year 2017 by The Times and The Sunday Times, University of Leeds has an inspiring journey to share.
