About Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts

Founded on the grounds of the bygone Liverpool Institute for Boys, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) has an intriguing history dating back to 1996. It all began ironically from the dilapidated state of the former boys' institute which had been closed since 1985. Paul McCartney, a former student of the old school, was appalled by its declining state during his visit in 1992. He pledged the revival of the institution which eventually led to the birth of LIPA.

LIPA was crafted with the creative vision of Mark Featherstone-Witty, also known for establishing The Brit School. Featherstone-Witty embarked on a new inventive journey for a university-level performing arts institution, with LIPA being the fruitful outcome of his endeavours. At LIPA, countless opportunities await students in the realm of performing arts. From music and entertainment technology to dance and acting, the institute offers an extensive array of programmes. It also prides itself with incredibly devoted faculty members who groom the students to reach their highest potential.

A myriad of students from diverse backgrounds converge at LIPA, creating a dynamic atmosphere conducive to learning and growing in the field of performing arts. International students, including those from India, have marked their presence at LIPA and have relished the excellent studying environment and opportunities offered. It's a hotspot for students aspiring to carve a niche in the global landscape of performing arts.

Financial assistance at LIPA is a boon for international students. While studying abroad can be a weighty financial affair, LIPA eases this pressure through several scholarship options. It's an encouraging endeavour by LIPA to make quality performing arts education more financially accessible for international students, thus making their study abroad experience more enriching and less taxing.

History Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts

Could a derelict building transform into a prestigious institution of performing arts? Remarkably, two visionaries decided just that. Meet Paul McCartney and Mark Featherstone-Witty, the brains behind LIPA – the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. You know that's the place where talent thrives, opportunities blossom, and dreams turn reality.

Let's rewind to 1985. McCartney, a former student at the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys spotted his old school building lying forlorn and forsaken. He felt, instead of becoming an eyesore, it could be resurrected, brought back to life as a new home for creativity and growth. Around the same time, Featherstone-Witty had founded the Brit School in London and yearned to replicate its success elsewhere.

In an instance of serendipity, George Martin, a renowned record producer, introduced the like-minded duo to each other. The ambitious project - envisioning a world-class institution for performing arts - started to take shape.

Seven years of tireless efforts and the investment of £20m paved the way for LIPA. On 7 June 1996, Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated the institution. With the first decade of LIPA's journey, its achievements were celebrated in a grand event at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and documented in a book titled, "LIPA - The First Ten Years in Pictures", penned by Featherstone-Witty.

Let's fast forward to 2006, a year that saw LIPA ascending as a higher education institution (HEI). If you think "Is it just like any other HEI?", here's what might interest you - LIPA is the most favored destination by international students. With a Gold Standard award from Investors in People, LIPA remains the only HEI to achieve this feat in the UK. Additionally, they also boast the highest concentration of Fellows and Associates recognized by the Higher Education Academy.

In March 2012, the institution, ever-evolving, made a significant decision. It bought the former building of the Liverpool College of Art for £3.7 million. Over the next four years, the building was reborn as a model-of-the-art teaching facility, ready in August 2016.

Keen on providing quality education at all levels, LIPA also expanded into primary and sixth form education. In 2014, they opened a primary school, closely followed by a sixth-form college in September 2016. Both institutions became formidable contenders in no time, with a rush of applicants leading to oversubscription.

With a heavy heart in March 2015, Featherstone-Witty resigned as the secretary of LIPA. However, his legacy continued in his absence. A survey in 2017 highlighted LIPA’s successful alumni – 91% of the 2014 graduates were employed, and 83% were delving deep into the performing arts.

So, as international students, you’ll find LIPA is not just an institution; it’s a movement that enables dreams, empowers talent, and embodies success. Here, history isn't just retold, it's made. Are you ready to be a part of it?
