History University of Liverpool

Opening its doors in 1881 as University College Liverpool, the University of Liverpool became a beacon for intellectual growth, welcoming its pioneering class of students in 1882. It wasn't long before they became a part of the federal Victoria University in 1884, setting the stage for a series of historic developments.

Oliver Lodge, a professor within its walls, was the genius to make the world's first public radio transmission in 1894. Not stopping there, two years later, he designed the first surgical X-ray in the UK. Something else quite remarkable happened in 1899 - the university gave birth to the Liverpool University Press, now as the third-oldest university press in England.

Fast forward to 1903 after the university had gained its independence through a royal charter and an act of Parliament. It transformed into a self-governing entity, rightly terming itself the University of Liverpool, with the power to award its own degrees.

During the following years, the university witnessed some critical discoveries that changed the face of medical science. In the frame was Sir Charles Sherrington's revolutionary discovery of the synapse and William Blair-Bell's therapeutic advancements in the treatment of cancer.

Come the 1930s and 1940s, two more pathbreaking figures would emerge from the university - Sir James Chadwick and Sir Joseph Rotblat. Both of them played a monumental role in the creation of the atomic bomb. And who can forget Allan Downie? As the Professor of Bacteriology from 1943 to 1966, he contributed significantly to the global effort in eradicating smallpox.

The university became a founding member of the illustrious Russell Group in 1994, a gathering of twenty of the most research-intensive universities. And in the new millennium, its physicists, engineers, and technicians actively participated in the construction of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

University of Liverpool made a strategic alliance with Sylvan Learning, now known as Laureate International Universities, in 2004. Later, in 2019, they joined hands with Kaplan Open Learning for their online programmes, while Laureate continued to offer teaching services for existing students until 2021.

An impressive ten Nobel Prize winners have hailed from the University of Liverpool, including Sir Ronald Ross, Charles Barkla, and Martin Lewis Perl. Moreover, it's also associated with a handful of Lasker Award winners, American's version of the Nobels, like Professors Ronald Finn, Sir Cyril Clarke, and Sir David Weatherall.

The university's vibrant history wasn't without its poignant chapters. The academic year 2013/2014 saw numerous strikes with staff members, protesting a pay rise of merely 1% - a decline of 13% when accounting for inflation since 2008. Interestingly, student bodies like the university's Guild of Students and the National Union of Students stood in solidarity with the striking staff. The strikes saw active participation from students, who went on to occupy various campus buildings.

That's the dynamic history of the University of Liverpool, an institution that has been the cradle of numerous groundbreaking achievements, nurturing minds that changed the world.
