Did you know the foundation of Birkbeck, University of London, happened on an exciting night in 1823? Our hero, Sir George Birkbeck, a talented physician and University of Edinburgh graduate, made history when he created the "London Mechanics' Institute." Picture the scene: over two thousand people packed into the Crown and Anchor Tavern, high on the promising energy of a new educational venture. Although not everyone celebrated; some naysayers accused Birkbeck of "scatterings the seeds of evil!"
Not daunted, Birkbeck moved with the Institute swiftly up to the posh Southampton Buildings on Chancery Lane in 1825. Can you imagine? Merely two years later, the doors opened with great ceremony for the first group of female students. In 1858, a significant alteration to the University of London's structure brought about easier access to its degree exams thus, making the Institute the main provider of part-time university education.
In 1866, the Institute got a facelift and a stylish new name: "the Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution." Nearly two decades later, in 1885, the Institution moved again, this time to the ravishing Breams Building, on Fetter Lane, for an incredible 67 years.
Birkbeck made impressive strides during the early 20th century. It set up its Students' Union in 1904 and was officially known as "Birkbeck College" from 1907. Some years later, in 1913, a review strongly suggested that Birkbeck become a constituent college, effectively elevating its status. But, thanks to the interruption of the First World War, the actualization of this upgrade had to wait. However, in 1926, a Royal Charter finally came along and cemented Birkbeck's place among the pantheon of great institutions.
It was in 1921, Birkbeck’s first female professor, Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan, entered the scene and pioneered botany teaching. Through the war years, Birkbeck stood as a beacon of resilience, serving as the only central University of London college that didn't move out of the capital. Even the Blitz couldn't dampen the spirit; despite a library hit in 1941, teaching soldiered on.
Fast forward to 1952, Birkbeck moved to its current nest in Malet Street. In 2002, a significant rebranding effort saw 'the university' added to its name, now making it "Birkbeck, University of London." This new and improved title came along with a spruced-up Malet Street building, officially opened by none other than the Chancellor of the University of London, The Princess Royal, in 2003.
There was more expansion on the horizon. In 2006, an impressive £5 million was granted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to develop an east London provision. This collaboration, established in partnership with the University of East London, and launched as Birkbeck Stratford.
While Birkbeck holds the powers to grant its own degrees, it prefers to offer University of London degrees. However, this doesn't limit its educational diversity, as it provides a range of continuing education courses, foundation degrees, and short courses.
200 years of history recently culminated in "Birkbeck, a History of the University," published by Oxford University Press in 2022. And let's not forget, a significant chapter of this narrative took form in 1876, with the foundation of the London Society for the Extension of University Education. Also, in 1988, the University of London's Department of Extra-Mural Studies found its steady place in Birkbeck. It's indeed been a history filled with challenges, triumphs, and constant evolution. What do YOU think the next chapter holds?
