History City & Guilds of London Art School

Once upon a time, way back in 1854, there was a chap named the Honourable Society of the Art Union of London. Fancy name, isn’t it? Well, this group of folks had a grand idea to start an art school. They named it 'The South London School of Technical Art', or in less of a mouthful, 'Lambeth Art School'. And thus, the seeds of what we now call the City & Guilds of London Art School were planted.

But why settle for a modest beginning, eh? The Art school had its royal connection right from its inception. Queen Victoria's hubby, Prince Albert himself had a keen interest in the school and became its royal patron in 1857. With a wee tip of the royal hat, the moniker was elevated to the 'Royal Female School of Art'. Talk about being in the big league!

Now, for something truly revolutionary, in 1879, the institute took a bit of a detour from its all-girls policy and started admitting men. Imagine that, an equal opportunity learning centre in the 19th century, quite ahead of its time, it was!

Decades rolled by, and around the 1930s, the London County Council, known as LCC (everybody loves an acronym), got a bit of a say in the running of the school, turned the reins and changed the name again! Say hello to the 'City and Guilds of London Institute for the Advancement of Technical Education'. Phew! That’s a lot to fit on a business card.

Fast forward to the 1970s, the LCC was no more, and like a baby bird leaving the nest, the art school went independent. It decided to stick with the tag, 'City & Guilds of London Art School' - simple, straightforward and classy!

Our beloved school has been home to many famous mugs. Standout alumni include the likes of Elizabeth Frink, Sadiq Kureishi and Carlin Domene. But it's not all about celebrity status. The school’s been sprinkling its magic on countless aspiring artists from around the world.

The school offers a wide variety of courses for every blooming Picasso out there. From conservation to fine arts to historic carving, the palette is quite diverse. Adds a bit of colour to your academic experience, don't you think?

Rolling into the 21st century, the art school continues to keep its legacy alive. With an open-door policy, international students, including our bright sparks from India, get a chance to imbibe the knowledge and broaden their artistic horizon. It’s practically a candy store for any art enthusiast!

Studying at the City & Guilds of London Art School is like embracing a slice of history itself. It’s been a rough and tumble journey for our dear school, but hey, all good things take time, right? So, step on in, the canvas of your future awaits.

And that's all, folks! Quite a rollercoaster ride, eh? If this bit of history tickled your curiosity, hold onto your horses. The actual experience of being part of this illustrious institution is bound to be an adventure much grander. So, for all you eager beavers out there, it's time to chase your artistic dreams! London's calling!
