More than a century ago, back in 1891, an intriguing tale started unfurling in the realm of academia. Imagine this; a distinguished assembly known as the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, one of the Livery Companies of the City of London, decided to embark on an educational venture. They founded what was then called the "Goldsmiths' Technical and Recreative Institute," or Goldsmiths' Institute for short. This company was no ordinary one; tracing its roots back to the 12th century, these were the makers of royal jewels - goldsmiths, silversmiths, and jewellery designers of repute.
Their newfound educational project was nothing less than a quest for knowledge in the realms of technical skill, health, and general well-being among men and women of the industrial, working and artisan classes. They chose New Cross as the ideal location for their Institute. This same place also housed the erstwhile Royal Naval School, and the very same building endearingly referred to as Richard Hoggart Building today, remains the campus's beating heart.
As years progressed, 1904 marked a significant milestone in this journey. Goldsmiths' Institute merged with the University of London and re-christened itself as Goldsmiths’ College. Consider this; Goldsmiths was the most massive teacher training hub in the country at that point and proceeded to expand its horizons even further. Fanning out into refresher courses for teachers, the University Postgraduate Certificate in Education and an Art teacher's Certificate course, it indeed spread its knowledge wings wide!
No tale is complete without the twist, and for Goldsmiths, it came in 1907. It designed a new Arts building, a marvelous creation attributed to Sir Reginald Blomfield, to expand its campus. Yet a whiff of war in the air during the Second World War posed a thread that led to the entire faculty and students' evacuation to University College, Nottingham. Boy did that decision save the day as an incendiary bomb ran havoc and gutted the main building in 1940.
The aftermath of the war in the 1960s saw Goldsmiths recuperating with renewed vigor. Expansion came in the way of student influx and echoed in the esteemed recognition that it gained in arts, social sciences, and new teacher training qualifications. More buildings sprung up, and a significant acquisition happened, adding the erstwhile Deptford Town Hall and Laurie Grove Baths buildings to its campus. Today, these buildings hold the prestigious Grade II listed building status.
Fast forward to 1988, and the Institute now known as Goldsmiths College, secured the title of a full-fledged College of the University of London. It further received a Royal Charter in 1990. Richard Hoggart, Andrew Rutherford and Ben Pimlott were among its distinguished wardens, while the current, and first woman, Warden is Frances Corner.
The narrative of this journey would feel incomplete without a mention of how the former boiler house of Laurie Grove Baths got a fresh lease of life as it got refurbished and opened as Goldsmiths CCA in 2018. Goldsmiths has always been at the forefront of embracing new age changes. A shining example of this was in August 2019 when they pledged to a greener future by eliminating beef products from their premises and imposing a 10p levy on plastic usage. This initiative was the beacon that set the pathway to their commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2025.
In more than a century, Goldsmiths, University of London has transformed into an institution of repute, tracing a fantastic journey from its origination in 1891. Laden with an illustrious history, bold decisions and a constant pursuit of knowledge, it stands today as a beacon of learning and sustainability. The tale of the Goldsmith-turned-academic is as fascinating as it gets, wouldn't you agree?
