History Guildhall School of Music & Drama

Stepping back in time to the 27th of September, 1880, imagine walking through the doors of a once-abandoned warehouse in the heart of the City of London. This is where our story begins, the inception of the Guildhall School of Music, the first civic music college in Britain. Initially, the school catered to 64 part-time students, a small and humble beginning that soon was overshadowed with astonishing growth.

Fast-forward to 1887, the school had blossomed beyond its humble origins and found a need to relocate. The new home was in John Carpenter Street and housed the music school and two city-owned schools, all nestled within an intricate city-built educational structure. By December 9, 1886, with the opening ceremony graced by the Lord Mayor of London, Sir Reginald Hanson, the school was set for its next phase of growth.

Under the leadership of its first principal, Thomas Henry Weist Hill, and his impressive team of ninety instructors, education thrived. The architect behind this seat of learning was Sir Horace Jones. He crafted a haven for musical pieces, including a professor's lounge and 45 studios, every one protected by a foot-thick layer of concrete for soundproofing. The dedication to music was palpable, with a grand and upright piano gracing each room, and even a special organ room.

To witness the crescendo of melodies, there was a special "practice" room, which in reality served as a mini-concert hall. Choir and orchestra rehearsals held sway here alongside bi-weekly school concerts. In the beginning, like modest roots, the school stuck to part-time courses, but by 1920, full-time programmes also emerged.

Come 1935, the school expanded from its musical limits and introduced additionals like speech, voice, and acting. It was at this juncture, the school added "and Drama" to its title, fully embodying its eclectic teaching palette.

The 1977 move to the Barbican Centre, a bustling hub within the City of London, marked another milestone. Owned, funded, and managed by the City of London, the Guildhall School had indeed come a long way.

In 1993, the School leased an 18th-century courtyard, which was once the birthplace of Samuel Whitbread's first brewery! This historic site was transformed into Sundial Court, a comfortable residence for 178 students located a mere three-minute walk from the school.

In 2001, a proud moment arrived. Baroness Blackstone, announced the Barbican Centre and the Guildhall School's inclusion in the Grade II listing. This marked an important recognition of the school's cultural and architectural significance.

The accolades didn’t stop there. Guildhall Connect, the development outreach programme of the school, was honoured with the Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2005. The opera programme followed suit and received this prestigious award in 2007.

In 2013 and 2014, Guildhall marked its position as the No. 1 specialist institution in the UK by the Guardian University Guide. However, the largest investment came with the £90 million transformation of the neighbouring Milton Court. A new building was constructed in 2013, brimming with new performance arenas and teaching spaces.

As of now, the School offers undergraduate and graduate programmes and supports the Junior Guildhall, a specialised Saturday class for young pupils aged 4 to 18.

The school didn’t just change facilities; it changed looks too, with a fresh, modern logo unveiled in August 2014. This gesture embodies the constant evolution and commitment towards progress that forms the backbone of Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
