Imagine, if you will, travelling back to the year 1861, to the bustling city of London. It was in this year that a certain Henry Wylde inaugurated what would become one of the most esteemed institutions of arts and drama in the world, the London Academy of Music. Yes, this historic academy first opened its doors at St. James's Hall, welcoming both men and women in separate sections, a progressive move for the times.
Every student that showed an inkling of talent and a thirst for learning was invited to join, whether they could afford the annual fee of 15 guineas (equivalent to £15 15s 0d) or not; the academy offered full scholarships for deserving pupils. By November 15, just a few months from its inception, teaching had already begun!
On April 29, 1863, the students of the academy showcased their talents in their very first philharmonic concert, a beautiful rendition of Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 3, following a public rehearsal four days prior. Yet, despite its prestigious musical beginnings, the academy would soon find another purpose.
In the heart of the 1880s, the London Academy of Music expanded its horizons to include teaching spoken English, becoming a core part of our institution's work. This new focus led to the development of the LAMDA examinations, public speech evaluations that have since evolved into a comprehensive system of performance evaluation, later establishing LAMDA as the largest Speech and Drama Board in the United Kingdom.
Through the early 1900s, LAMDA merged with the London Music School and the Forest Gate School of Music, both established after LAMDA's founding, becoming the Metropolitan Academy of Music in 1906. However, this name didn't stick for long; in 1935, under the guidance of Wilfrid Foulis, the institution adopted its current name: the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. LAMDA and music would soon part ways, though, as, post World War II when the academy reopened in 1945, it discontinued its musical training to focus solely on drama and speech.
Fast forwarding to the 21st century, until 2019, the academy was an associate member of the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama and received funding from the Office for Students. However, in a bold move, LAMDA decided to step away from the Conservatoire, becoming an independent organization, now sources its funding directly from the Office for Students and Research England.
This legacy continues today with LAMDA thriving under the guidance of its leaders. Sarah Frankcom, steered the academy as Director until her announced departure in August 2021. Following a methodical search for a successor, the board of trustees unanimously appointed professor Mark O'Thomas as the principal and chief executive in August 2022. Simultaneously, Dr. Philippa Standberg-Long took up the mantle as head of actor training.
