In the buzzing era of the 1960s, an aspirational man named Robin Howard, passionate about contemporary dance, dreamt of establishing an institution that could preserve and propagate it. And it all led to the cornerstone of the London Contemporary Dance School and its partner company, the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, both taking their first steps under the umbrella of the Contemporary Dance Trust in the pivotal year of 1966.
Fast forward to 1969, fuelled with the generous support of Robin Howard, the Contemporary Dance Trust found a new home at 17 Duke's Road. This wasn't merely a location, but a monumental symbol that was endearingly renamed 'The Place'. Can you imagine how electric the atmosphere must have been?
The story didn't stop there, however. In 1978, thanks to the benevolent aid of the Arts Council and the Linbury Trust, The Place underwent a transformative change. It bloomed with the creation of spanking new studios for the Dance School, colourfully springing up on Flaxman Terrace. It was an awe-inspiring scene, picture it; a realm dedicated to passionate dancers with the fervor to extend the beatiful art form across the world!
Beating every odd, LCDS then took a pivotal stride in 1982 when it started offering a BA Honours degree in Contemporary Dance. Such program was validated by none other than the reputable institution, the University of Kent. Fast track to 1994, the landscape evolved again with a heartbreaking end of the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. But, as one door closed, another opened. The resilient Richard Alston Dance Company sprung into existence, shaping the institution's rich tapestry further.
