Once upon a time, way back in 1889, a dollup of eager-to-educate peeps set the cornerstone for something ground-breaking! They called it Morley Memorial College for Working Men and Women, known to you and me as Morley College London. Hopscotch through history, and you see a gal named Emma Cons leading the brigade. Now, she was a kick, full of spunk and dreams of accessible education for all.
Surprisingly, this wasn't your average humdrum school; these folks were pulling up their socks to give the working-class a taste of higher learning. By early 1900s, ole Morley was no longer just a "night school", it was attracting ‘nuff youngsters and adults, eager for the sparks to ignite their drab daily lives. I kid you not, from pottery to opera, this was the place to get your hands dirty, and your voice heard!
But fortune can play pickle sometimes. During the Second World War, Morley saw its fair share of action. Literally! In 1940, the whole shebang, I mean the main building, got blown to smithereens during the London Blitz. Crikey! But fear not, this setback didn’t knock the wind out of Morley’s sails. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall and all that; Morley put itself together again!
Post war, thanks to our blokes Gustav Holst and Michael Tippett, the college found its feet and its voice with music playing a pivotal role, (I’m singing praises here!). By the time the 60s made an appearance, Morley was a buzz with music and dance, and an International Piano Competition was the cherry on top. Aha, but the story didn’t end there, no sirree!
Tap dance through the 70s and 80s and you’d spot Morley emerging as the creme de la creme of adult and community education. Come 1990s, and they threw open the doors to the newly refurbished Nancy Seear building, named after their longest-serving Chair of Governors. Talking about standing on shoulder of giants!
Feather in the cap moment came in 1992, when Morley was made an Independent Further and Higher Education College by the British Government. Imagine the oohs and the aahs!
