History Mountview - Academy of Theatre Arts

Setting a stage in 1945, in the heart of Crouch End, North London, two enthusiasts, Peter Coxhead and Ralph Nossek embarked on an enthralling journey. What began as "The Mountview Theatre Club," a modest amateur repertory company, staged a new production every fortnight, leaving the locals spellbound. Coxhead's rendition of Eugene O'Neill's "Mourning Becomes Electra" became a celebrated affair and the production of the legendary Arnold Wesker Trilogy encompassing Chicken Soup with Barley, Roots and I'm Talking about Jerusalem took it to loftier heights.

Acting and theatre, when fuelled by passion, don't adhere to financial obstacles. A then 21-year-old Coxhead, armed with determination, ambitions, and a borrowed sum of £2,300, acquired the lease of Cecile House, a large dilapidated property in 1946. His vision unfolded to convert the venue’s gymnasium into what we today recognise as the renowned Mountview Theatre.

November 1947, an air of anticipation filled the venue, as the Mountview Theatre cherished its official inauguration with the production of "The Importance of Being Earnest". A new dawn unfolded as they managed to stage a play every month until 1949. Soon after, Coxhead claimed the ownership from the leaseholders, enhancing the theatre's repertoire with a new performance every fortnight for the next 25 years.

The Academy marked another milestone in 1958, when they introduced part-time acting courses and technical theatre skills training. This signalled the formal recognition of the Mountview Theatre School with George Norman as its first president and Coxhead as its principal. After about ten years, in 1969, the institution welcomed full-time drama courses, which were an instant hit among theatre enthusiasts.

The 1970s were an exciting time for the Academy. In 1971, another feather was added to Mountview's hat as it opened a second performance space, christened as the Judi Dench Theatre. Housing ten acting studios, three technical studios, and a wardrobe boasting over 15,000 costumes, the school now had a grandeur like no other. Further expansion followed, and by 1985, it had leased more spaces at Wood Green, known as the Sir Ralph Richardson Memorial Studios.

1996 saw Coxhead handing over the school's leadership reins to Paul Clements, former director of drama at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Coxhead didn't disappear but instead took on the role of chairman and chief executive of the school board, where he served till 2000. That year marked a significant change as Mountview Theatre School was officially rechristened as the Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. Soon after, Coxhead was honoured with an MBE for his Services to the Arts in 2001, culminating his inspiring journey with the institute, until his demise in 2004.

A brief period of leadership transition followed Coxhead's death. Paul Clements continued to shape the Academy's future until 2008, after which Sue Robertson, ex-Dean of the School of Arts at City University London, came aboard. In 2014, Stephen Jameson, the former associate director at LAMDA, replaced her.

Mountview became a household name in 2007 when the British reality TV show E4 School of Performing Arts offered scholarships to aspiring actors. Mountview's Director of Acting Programme, Amir M. Korangy featured in the panel of the show, increasing its visibility and relevance.

A significant transformation awaited in 2011, when Principal Robertson proposed relocating to Crouch End. The plan included a complete regeneration of the Grade II-listed Town Hall involving an estimated investment of £19 million. However, by 2016, Mountview had decided against it and instead chose to establish a new site in Peckham, south-east London. The tale of Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts arrived at another important chapter when this new building opened its doors in September 2018. Bright young talents continue to walk these corridors, in their quest of mastering the craft and leaving their indelible mark on the world of theatre.
