Imagine, it's 1972. Richmond American University is nothing more than sizzling idea in the visionary mind of Cyril Taylor—the heat behind the American Institute For Foreign Study (AIFS). Cyril swiftly breathed life into his dream, transforming it into Richmond College: our first form as an American school in no other than cosmopolitan London!
You might be thinking, "Richmond... why does that ring a bell?" Well, fun fact for you: our founding tale is intertwined with that of Richmond Theological College, a revered part of the University of London. Birthed in 1843, this esteemed Methodist college fluttered in and out of AIFS' grasp, housing its London study abroad programmes for several years. Eventually in 1972, Cyril bought a huge part of its site, an exciting £300,000 deal, which is now the sum of £3.82 million today! This mesmerising landmark embraced most of the original College’s structures and the majestic front lawns, forging a new American liberal arts college.
Richmond’s journey did not stop there. Remember 1978, the year when our second campus sprouted on St Albans Grove and Ansdell Street in Kensington. This wasn't just a geographic expansion, mind you; it also catered to our third and fourth-year students, as well as embracing the college's US Study Abroad Programme.
Interestingly, in the first few years, we only served as a homey shelter for US students studying abroad. However, the winds of change started to blow in 1981 when we earned licence to award US undergraduate degrees and earned formidable accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
Moving forward to 1988, we're in bustling Kensington, where an expanded campus welcomed a little glitz and glamour with its official opening by none other than Diana, Princess of Wales! A soiree with royalty—doesn’t that sound exciting?
Even marked by such unforgettable events, Richmond kept evolving. In 1995, we parted ways with AIFS and emerged as an independent, non-profit educational institution. Our first postgraduate degree came in 1998 with an MBA degree—another milestone in our illustrious journey.
Fast forward to 2018, we celebrated a significant achievement of being granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers in the UK. This meant our students could earn double the recognition—degrees from both the UK and US right here in London.
It wasn't all rosy, we did hit some turbulent times. In 2019, after significant controversy involving our position with the Cyril Taylor Charitable Foundation, our then president Lawrence Abeln moved on from his role. Financial complications led us to briefly suspend student recruitment in January 2020.
Yet, like the phoenix we are, we rose with renewed vigour. March 2020 marked the signing of a new partnership with China Education Group, providing Richmond students access to internships, exchange programs across a multitude of universities and institutes in China and Australia. Moreover, it bolstered Richmond's international marketing and recruitment strategy securing the long-term future of the university.
Circling back to recent history, by the end of 2021, most of the buildings in Kensington area have been vacated, retaining one site on Kensington High Street. Exciting times lie ahead. We made the big announcement in November 2021—we're relocating our Richmond campus to sophisticated new premises in Chiswick Business Park in the summer of 2022. And in a bittersweet farewell, the Kensington High Street location wrapped up student courses by spring 2023.
