History Royal Academy of Dramatic Art

Here is fascinating story of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and its magnificent legacy in the world of performing arts. The academy traces its roots to 25th April 1904. It was actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree's brainchild, and he inaugurated the academy in London’s vibrant West End, specifically at Her Majesty's Theatre in Haymarket.

In the following year, it shifted base to Gower Street, where a council was formed to take care of the academy's operations. Among the distinguished council members was George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated playwright who not only contributed generously from his play Pygmalion's royalties but also regularly lectured the academy's students.

Significant developments were just around the corner. By 1920, the academy received a royal charter. A sophisticated theatre was established in 1921 on Malet Street. Here's an exciting piece of trivia - Edward, the Prince of Wales, inaugurated the theatre. In the subsequent year, legendary actor Sir John Gielgud pursued his studies at the academy for a year. Can you imagine your footsteps echoing in the same hallways walked by such greats?

As progress continued, the academy received its first government aid, a substantial amount of £500 in 1924. Unfortunately, the original Gower Street buildings were demolished in 1927, but a new structure, financed by George Bernard Shaw, replaced them. Fondly remembered for his significant contributions, Shaw left a third of his royalties to the academy after his death in 1950.

Fast forward to the year 2000. The academy expanded its scope and founded RADA Enterprises Ltd (known today as RADA Business), offering training programs and coaching for businesses in using drama techniques for communication and team building. Its profits are invested back into the academy for its operational costs.

In 2001, the academy paired up with the London Contemporary Dance School to establish the UK's first Conservatoire for Dance and Drama. However, RADA parted ways with the conservatoire in 2019 to function independently. As of July 2018, the academy is registered as a higher education institution with the Office for Students.

Let's walk you back to 2004, when renowned photographer Cambridge Jones was commissioned to commemorate RADA's centenary with a collection of inspiring photographs, subsequently published as a book. The subjects of these portraits were no ordinary people but the likes of John Hurt, Alan Rickman, and Joan Collins, and many more distinguished names.

2011 marked a new significant step in RADA's journey. They allied with Trinity College Dublin to form the Lir Academy. Mimicking RADA's effective practical theatre training methods, the Lir Academy designed its course offerings similarly.

Wouldn't you want to study at such a historic institution that acknowledges its challenges and is committed to making a difference? Edward Kemp, the academy's then principal, acknowledged in July 2020 that institutional racism was a significant issue. He did not stop there; he laid out a detailed plan aiming to carry out necessary reforms, showing that the academy indeed leads by example. Their story is truly testament to how a well-respected institution evolves into a beacon of hope and learning for all.
