Back in 1822, a man named John Fane – the 11th Earl of Westmorland – had this crazy idea. He wanted to establish an academy dedicated to music. Not on his own, of course. He was joined by a French harpist and composer named Nicolas Bochsa, who shared his vision and ambition. Together, they established the academy that quickly gained reputation.
However, let's not forget the role of one extremely supportive individual: Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. A violinist in his own right and a keen supporter of the arts, Wellington was determined to see the academy succeed. So much so that King George IV granted the Academy a royal charter in 1830, thus increasing its prestige.
Did everything go according to plan? Not quite. In 1866, the very existence of the academy was threatened. Facing the risk of closure, the Royal College of Music was founded in nearby South Kensington. But the academy didn't close down. Instead, it underwent a transformation, thanks to William Sterndale Bennett, a former pupil who was recently appointed as the Principal. Bennett took over as the chairman of the academy's board of directors, restructuring its finances and reputation.
All of this change needed space, of course. Initially, the Academy was situated in three 18th century houses, combined into what Arnold Bax jokingly referred to as an "architectural rabbit warren." But in 1911, the Academy found a new home. Designed by Sir Ernest George, the premises (including the 450-seat Duke's Hall) cost £51,000 to construct and stood on the site that was previously an orphanage.
The Academy continued to expand over the years. In 1976, it acquired several houses on the north side and constructed a new opera theatre. Generously donated by philanthropist Sir Jack Lyons, the theatre was named after him. But it didn't end there. The Academy also added two new recital spaces, a recording studio, an electronic music studio, multiple practice rooms, and office space.
Even in the late 1990s, the Academy wasn't done growing. The building at 1–5 York Gate, originally designed by John Nash in 1822, was added to the premises. Now, it houses a new museum, a musical theatre studio and several teaching rooms. A freshly built underground passage and the innovative, underground, barrel-vaulted 150-seat David Josefowitz recital hall connect the main Academy building to 1–5 York Gate – a perfect example of old and new hand in hand.
