History SOAS University of London

Breathing life into the fascinating tale of the School of Oriental Studies (SOAS), sorcerers of language and mystery, beckons us to journey back to the vestiges of history - to the delightful borough of Finsbury Circus, London. It was here, framed by the towering columns of the London Institution, that SOAS sprouted like a tiny sapling in 1916. Rolled out like a parchment penned by time, its royal charter was christened by George V, the reigning monarch of the time, on the 5th of June. It flung open its doors to thirsty knowledge seekers on the 18th of January 1917, marking the start of an era of unique learning, with the founding event unfolding in all its grandeur a month later, graced by the likes of Earl Curzon of Kedleston, erstwhile Viceroy of India.

What makes SOAS more than just another institution in the academic panorama is its unique mission. The institution, forged by the firm hand of the British state, was intended to elevate Britain's standing in Asia and Africa, fostering stronger political, commercial, and military inroads. It was a crucible, where colonial administrators, missionaries, medical practitioners, teachers, and military officers were steeped in the essence of their respective destination cultures in Asia or Africa, all in preparation of their pivotal roles in shaping the relations between the continents.

SOAS was planned and established as an intellectual fortress for advancing the scientific and commercial interests of Britain in Africa and Asia. Beyond this, it also aimed to serve as a beacon of oriental studies equivalent to the revered institutions of Berlin, Petrograd, and Paris. Born as a thought-seed in the minds of its founders, it soon became the sacred ground where future British administrative and military personnel honed their skills.

In 1938, 'Africa' was appended to the school's name, reflecting its broader representation. During the tumultuous tremors of world war two, the school was temporarily uprooted and billeted at Christ's College, Cambridge. The war period saw some of the most significant developments for SOAS. Most notably, the War Office joined forces with the school in 1942 to offer State Scholarships for prospective military translators and interpreters, training them in pivotal languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Persian, and Turkish - fondly creating the group known as 'the Dulwich boys.'

The aftermath of war presented an opportunity for SOAS to expand its horizon. The year 1947 saw the birth of the SOAS School of Law, marking another large stride for the institution. Nevertheless, time's ruthless tides brought along periods of economic austerity, stagnating growth, but the entrance of Sir Cyril Philips as the director in 1956 rekindled the flame of progression.

Today, SOAS, with its dedicated focus on Humanities, Law, Languages, and Social Sciences pertaining to Asia and Africa, sits under the broad umbrella of the University of London, hosting an impressive number of 6000 students. It was in 2011 the institution received the ability to award degrees under its name, joining its brethren like the London School of Economics and the University College London. The institute has recreated itself digitally too, launching a new visual identity in 2012, which has given it a strong, recognizable brand presence.

However, the journey of SOAS hasn't always been smooth.Struggles grappled the academy, accusations of systemic antisemitism and anti-Israel rhetoric repeatedly surfacing since 2005. Despite these challenges, the SOAS continues to rise, endeavouring to be a beacon of higher learning, where students from different walks of life come to understand the cultures of Asia and Africa against a background of past and present global realities.
