History The London Institute of Banking and Finance

Picture this – it’s 1879 and a group of insightful bank employees have a lightbulb moment – they realise that a need for professionalism and education in banking is paramount. Harnessing this brilliant vision, they establish what was first called the Institute of Bankers. Within its initial year, the institute's charm draws in a whopping 2000 members, just proving how well-received the idea was.

The very next year (1880), the institute holds its first examinations, shaking up the industry. Add to it another milestone in 1917 when the institute paved the way for women, opening its doors for their exams. Believe it or not, this was a whole year before women were even granted the right to vote within the UK!

In what could only be described as a momentous year (in 1987), the institute is granted a royal charter, witnessing a name change to become the Chartered Institute of Bankers. The following decade sees some shifts and reshuffles, merging in 1993 with the Chartered Building Societies Institute.

Now, it was time for the big leap. 1996 saw the introduction of the institute’s first degree, the prestigious BSc (Hons) in Financial Services. Delivered as a dual award in alliance with the famed University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, it was the first time a professional award was harmonised with a university degree.

1997 was another noteworthy year. The institute took on a new identity as the Institute of Financial Services. The same year saw the emergence of the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMAP) – as a pioneer qualification for UK's mortgage professionals.

Cut to 2001 – the institute launched an AS-level equivalent personal finance qualification for the eager young minds of the UK. Technological milestones were also achieved in the same year, with the institute becoming the first in its arena to conduct electronic assessments for its regulatory qualifications.

Following a change to the IFS School of Finance in 2006, another historic moment was witnessed in 2010. The Privy Council granted the institute the power to award its own undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, eliminating the need for third-party university validations.

Fast forward to the title 'University College' being granted by the Department for Business, Innovation, and Skills (BIS) in 2013. By 2016, the establishment underwent another name change and has since been known widely as The London Institute of Banking & Finance.

By 2023, there's yet another transformation. The Institute adopts a new identity– The London Foundation for Banking & Finance, whilst maintaining its status as an educational charity. A new around-the-corner organization, the London Institute of Banking & Finance Limited (LIBF Ltd.) is created. On 31st March 2023, the Institute's Ofqual-recognised awarding powers were whisked away to this new company. On this same day, LIBF Ltd. becomes a proud wholly-owned subsidiary of the revered IU Group and IU International University of Applied Sciences based in Germany. The institute's activities stayed constant, but it did lose its right to use, 'University,' or 'University College,' in its name due to these constitutional changes.

The original educational charity, continuing under the name of the London Foundation for Banking & Finance, kept going strong. It went on to award Chartered Banker status and conducted the Institute's charitable activities, just as powerfully as ever.
