History University of the Arts London

The vibrant and prestigious University of the Arts London is actually a magnificent amalgamation of seven independent schools. Each with a prestigious heritage revolving around a unique discipline of art, design, fashion, or media, these institutions collaborated for efficient administrative operations under the umbrella of the London Institute in 1986. The heavyweights of this collaboration included Saint Martin's School of Art, London College of Fashion, and the Central School of Art and Design, among others. Spreading their roots between mid-nineteenth to early twentieth-century, these schools were pillars of arts and crafts education.

An interesting twist in the tale occurred in 1988 with the Education Reform Act, binding the London Institute as a single entity. By 1989, the first court of governors was formed, with the esteemed John McKenzie leading as the appointed rector. Via the Privy Council's blessing in the form of degree-awarding powers in 1993, the institute manifested its academic grandeur even more.

The reins of the institute passed over to Sir William Stubbs as the new rector following McKenzie's retirement in 1996. The institute experienced a significant milestone when it received its unique coat of arms in 1998. The reputable Lord Stevenson of Coddenham ascended the mantle as the first chancellor in 2000, while Will Wyatt took up the prestigious role of chairman of governors a year before.

Sir Michael Bichard took over from Sir William as the rector after his retirement in 2001. He played an instrumental role in encouraging the London Institute to seek university status. Initially, the idea was laid aside, considering the individual international recognition of the colleges. However, in 2003, the Privy Council granted university status to the London Institute. Subsequently, the institute was rechristened as the University of the Arts London in 2004, becoming a household name for aspiring artists globally.

2006 saw the Wimbledon School of Art becoming a part of the family as the sixth college and was subsequently renamed Wimbledon College of Arts. The leadership torch passed onto Sir John Tusa, replacing Will Wyatt, as chairman in 2007, followed by Nigel Carrington, as rector, replacing Sir Michael Bichard in 2008.

Dark clouds hovered over the university between 2008 to 2010 as budgetary constraints caused staff reduction and course closures. In 2009, at the London College of Communication, mass resignation of staff, coupled with student protests marked the discontinuation of 16 of their 19 courses. However, the resolve of the academic fraternity overpowered the tough times.

One of the foundational colleges, the Central Saint Martins, relocated to a purpose-built complex in King's Cross and re-opened in June 2011, signalling bright and hopeful times ahead. The renowned artist Grayson Perry was chosen to succeed Kwame Kwei-Armah as chancellor in 2015, injecting a fresh perspective into the university's academic atmosphere.

In the recent chronicle of the university, James Purnell, replacing Sir Nigel Carrington, assumed the honoured position of Vice Chancellor and President from March 2021 following Carrington's knighthood recognition in 2019. This positions the University of the Arts London firmly as a formidable temple of artistic innovation and education, inspiring arts enthusiasts around the world.
