Sparkling it off from 1860, the University of West London bore its first seed as the Lady Byron School. Imagine this, nestled in what will be called the Ealing campus, Lady Byron School was the platform for what we now cherish as our university! Time passed, and the school evolved, transforming into the renowned Ealing College of Higher Education.
While Ealing College was just taking roots, a selective secondary school sprouted up in January 1912 on William Street, yes, you got that right, it's the Slough campus. Fast forward to the 1960s, and this selective secondary school expanded to become the Slough College of Further Education.
That's not it, though—the 1960s had another surprise in store for us. The St Mary’s Road site, the terrain we today recognise as Ealing Technical College, was busy educating brains in law and other exciting subjects through CNAA degrees.
Time sure does fly, and the 1980s swept in, bringing with it the transformation of Ealing Technical College to Thames Valley College of Higher Education. Yet, by 2011, these halls of wisdom were sadly closed.
Here's where it got even more interesting! In 1991, a fusion of minds and institutions occurred. Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, Queen Charlotte's College of Health Care Studies, and the London College of Music came together. The result? A mega institution christened as the Polytechnic of West London. By 1992, riding on the wings of the Further and Higher Education Act, the polytechnic metamorphosed into Thames Valley University (TVU).
Fast, isn't it? In 1994, TVU took more strides catching up with Northwick Park School of Nursing, Riverside College of Nursing, and North West Thames Regional Authority's AIDS unit. The next year, 1995, marked another merger with the Berkshire College of Nursing and Midwifery.
Now, let's fast forward to 2004 when an artistic twist occurred. Yes! Reading College and School of Arts and Design merged with our TVU, and guess what? The Kings Road and Crescent Road footprint of Reading College became essential TVU terrain.
By 2009, however, the university decided to pare down its further education courses along with the Kings Road site it inherited from Reading College. Then in May 2009 came the announcement of ending the chapter of Slough campus by 2010 due to relocation of a majority of nursing students to Reading. As for other courses, they found new homes at the university's Greater London campuses.
Did you think that was all? No way! In July 2009, the university was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize, rightly recognising its outstanding achievement and excellence in hospitality education.
In 2010, further education and the Kings Road site found a new steward as a revitalised Reading College. The university continued to own its other assets in Reading, around 40 miles west of London, including the Crescent Road site, formerly Reading College and the School of Arts and Design.
Then, amidst the warm summer of 2010, news arrived that the university would now be known as the University of West London! It was official, courtesy of the Privy Council. Fast forward to April 2011, and the Vice-Chancellor — none other than Peter John — announced an emblem that matched the university's evolution since 1992 and its focus on Brentford and Ealing campuses.
In 2015, exciting things were in the pipeline. A £100m expansion completely transformed the Ealing campus, equipping it with an updated library, a student union, and state-of-the-art teaching facilities.
Lastly, the magic of mergers wasn't done yet! In 2019, Drama Studio London in Ealing was incorporated into the university. And as recent as 2021, Ruskin College, Oxford, joined this wonderful journey.
Packed with this rich history, the University of West London continues to thrive, open its arms, and broaden its horizons for every eager mind out there. This is more than just a university; it’s a story. A grand, ever-evolving story, and it's just waiting for you to write your chapter!
