Back in the 19th century, a visionary named Sir Charles Hallé, sparked the flame that would later become the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). Our story starts in the bustling city of Manchester in 1858, where Hallé laid the first stone, the Hallé orchestra. The city hummed with music, and soon, whispers of a music college started to stir.
The early 90s witnessed Hallé's dream morph into a flaming passion for creating a musical institution. The whispers turned into conversations that echoed in the corners of Manchester. Emboldened by the support, a building on Ducie Street became the cradle for Hallé's dream. The dream was now becoming a reality. A dream nurtured by Hallé, endorsed by Queen Victoria with a Royal title, and brought to fruition by his appointment as the Principal.
The Royal Manchester College of Music (RMCM) opened its doors in 1893 with 80 eager students. By the end of the first year, the college proudly embraced 117 students. Manchester was alive with the rhythm of passion, a rhythm that sang the song of the RMCM. Schools became more than brick and mortar; it became a milestone in the symphony of Manchester.
Fast forward to 1920, and another melody was born in Manchester. The Northern School of Music established its roots in the city's soil, initially as a branch of the Matthay School of Music. The two institutions, RMCM and NSM, quietly coexisted, each playing its unique tune.
The year 1955 brought another crescendo to the chronicle of Manchester's musical heritage. NSM Principal, Hilda Collins identified the vital role of performance in training students. A meeting with RMCM Principal, Frederic Cox, seeded the idea of a duet, a potential fusion of the two colleges. Music was about to reach a new octave in Manchester.
Their collective vision simmered as discussions continued for more than a decade. In September 1967, the Joint Committee took the baton and began orchestrating plans to bring harmony between the two colleges.
And voila! In 1972, the two melodies merged into a beautiful symphony leading to the birth of RNCM. The next year, the RNCM found its permanent concert stage on Oxford Road. The new edifice marked a new era in the musical diary of Manchester, an era of unity, passion and a shared musical dream.
Steeped in rich traditional ethos, the RNCM now stands as a proud monument of the harmonious blend of two music institutions. Scribbled in every brick and lingered in every corner, our story is an ode to diligence, creativity, and above all, an unending love for music. A story that we continue to write, one melody at a time.
