History University of Northampton

Once upon a time, in the mid-13th century between 1261 and 1265, an academic giant named the University of Northampton sprang to life, etching its name in history as the third university in England and the 22nd in Europe. King Henry III himself had given his royal blessing in 1261, leading to the establishment of what was to become, if only for a while, a beacon of learning.

But as fate would have it, by 1265, the said University was no more. Influenced by bishops and magnates who saw the Northampton University as competition to Oxford, King Henry III dissolved the institution and went as far as signing a Royal Decree abolishing the creation of any university in Northampton.

Fast forward to a couple of centuries later, and in 1924, on the very site of Avenue Campus currently, the resilient town rose from the ashes, setting up a new learning institution – Northampton Technical College. Eight years later, none other than the Duke and Duchess of York were inaugurating a new structure for the college. And in that very year, 1937, a School of Art came into being.

By the 1970s, one glaring thing was missing in Northamptonshire – a teacher-training college. It was then that a displaced college from Liverpool found a new home in what is now known as Park Campus. This shift coincided with the opening of the College of Education in 1972 by none other than the Secretary of State for Education and Science, Margaret Thatcher.

By 1975, the rollercoaster of amalgamations began with the union of the Colleges of Technology and Art with the newly formed College of Education. The result? Nene College of Higher Education, a name inspired by the River Nene. The absorbing spree didn't quite stop there; by 1978, Leathersellers College from London had been integrated.

The 1990s brought significant transformation too. In 1993, the College incorporated St. Andrew's School of Occupational Therapy, gaining the power to award undergraduate degrees. 1997 saw another significant development which fused the Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery into its academic ecosystem.

And then, in 1999, a grand metamorphosis occurred. The establishment became University College Northampton. Only six years down the line, the academic institution swung up to university status.

You may wonder, however, how could they bypass King Henry III's Royal Decree? Well, it had to convince the Privy Council to lift the ancient law. The first step in the University's consolidation came in 2005, when it achieved the capability to validate its own research degrees – a task formerly done by the University of Leicester. 2006's graduation ceremony bore witness to seven students receiving the first-ever doctoral degrees validated by the University of Northampton.

Fast forward again to 2010, the School of Applied Sciences was repackaged as the School of Science and Technology. Along with its birth, was the rejuvenation of the Newton Building at Avenue Campus, which was officially ushered into service by none other than Princess Anne.
