Wound back the clock to the 1930s, where it all began. A visionary named A. J. Vereker, secretary of the Crusaders' Union, and his comrade Sir John Laing dreamt big. Their belief? To lay the foundation for a Bible college in the bustling city of London, for those who wished to master Christian teachings. The light of this dream first shone in May 1939, when a meeting for the cause was held, swiftly followed by a second gathering, assembling a wider community to outline the vision for the prospective college.
Just when the enthusiasm peaked, World War II engulfed 1939, pausing their ambitious endeavours. Resumed in 1942, these persevering visionaries brainstormed with a larger group of evangelical leaders. In October, they nailed down a doctrinal foundation for the college, and by November, The Bible College Council was born.
March 1943 ushered in a new phase. Graham Scroggie - a dedicated man with a passion for education got invited. He would be the college's director throughout the warfare. Incredibly, Sir John Laing generously fuelled finances, reinforced by a £200 donation from the council of the All Nations Christian College.
That year's autumn witnessed the first lessons and lectures take site in Eccleston Hall, officially kick-starting the public academic journey of the college. You see, by 1944, the student count touched over 300, which led to a dramatic increase to 1,400 by 1946. Imagine the awe-inspiring sight of students, filled with enthusiasm, pouring in- it was indeed a significant mark in the history of the institution.
Fast forward to 1970, and the college relocated to Northwood, replacing the London College of Divinity. It was an exciting shift that brought more opportunities, paving the way to the future. The 90s saw further growth. Meet the Guthrie Centre, a brand new hub for postgraduates that previously served as the Centre for Islamic Studies.
