In the vibrant heart of Norwich, England, a revolutionary venture kicked off in 1845. The city buzzed with excitement as a group of ambitious artists and followers of the 'Norwich School of Painters' established the Norwich School of Design. These groundbreaking pioneers' vision was to groom and nurture designers who could serve the burgeoning local industries. This school was no ordinary institution; its founders were part of the Norwich School of Painters, the only provincial British art group that managed to achieve an international reputation in the field of landscape painting.
Fast forward twenty years to 1965, and something interesting was starting to unfold. The educational authorities gave a nod to the Norwich School of Design's proposal to offer a Diploma in Art and Design. The task of validation was entrusted to the National Council for Diplomas in Art and Design (NCDAD). Imagine the jubilation of the students who were finally able to study for a degree!
The school soon began to make national waves in the art and design sector. And why wouldn't it, when a bunch of extraordinary practitioners and educators were leading it? Word quickly spread about the school's prowess in Painting and Graphic Design. By 1975, after a merger between NCDAD and the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), the school started offering its first BA Honours degree courses in Fine Art and Graphic Design. This time the validation came from CNAA.
The years rolled on, reaching 1989, a memorable year indeed! The Norwich School made a strategic move to merge with the Great Yarmouth College of Art. This alliance gave birth to the Norfolk Institute of Art and Design (NIAD). Two years later, in 1991, NIAD shook hands with the newly minted Anglia Polytechnic and became its Associate College. The validation responsibilities previously held by CNAA were now seamlessly undertaken by the Polytechnic, starting from September 1992. This arrangement was an opportunity for NIAD to extend its umbrella of offerings to include postgraduate provision.
So, what happened next? 1993 rolled around and saw the introduction of a trail-blazing MA course. The spotlight was on Fine Art, the first of its kind Master's degree offered by NIAD. The momentum continued, and in 1995, the institute welcomed its first-ever research degree student. What an achievement for an institution that had started a mere half-century earlier!
Onto the next landmark event, in 1994, NIAD gained new heights. The institute earned recognition as a Higher Education Institution (HEI), reclaiming its original name, Norwich School of Art and Design. The institute also unveiled a fresh corporate identity, turning a new page in its illustrious history.
Zoom in to November 2007, a huge milestone in the history of this institution. The School was now endowed with the privilege to confer its own degrees up to the Master's level. To commemorate this sterling achievement, it donned a new name, Norwich University College of the Arts.
Another leap in time to 2012 saw an intriguing twist to the narrative. A change in the student threshold for university status eligibility meant a potential upgrade for the College. From needing to have 4000 students, the benchmark was lowered to 1000. Now, doesn't this sound exciting?
The college seized this opportunity, and in 2013, Norwich University College of the Arts earned its University status! To put the ceremonial cherry on top, it was rechristened as Norwich University of the Arts. The university welcomed its first chancellor, John Hurt. What a fitting end to this epic saga, and what an inspiring story for every aspiring student who dreams of a stage like this to shine!
