History University of Law

Get this, way back in 1876, this little idea of a place called University of Law had begun to stir in the minds of the finest legal scholars. Imagine! They were likely sipping tea, thinking about how to shape the future and BOOM! The chatter about an eminent law school was in the air.

Fast-forward to a chilly morning in 1882, when good ol' Oliver Hooker gazed at an imposing structure in Ulting, Essex. Yup, that's the very same 'Big O' who had the honor of welcoming the very first batch of students in the newly established University of Law.

A good 15 years later, what do you know? The university had gained a rep for being one of the most prestigious law schools, a fact that still holds true to this day (yeah, you heard that right!).

Around 1930, a gent named Henry Goodier thought, why not globalize the study of law? Great idea right? Henry wasn't just a hat rack. His brainwaves led to the introduction of a whole new batch - International Studies. By the by, Hank became an important bloke around University of Law, his name the talk of the town.

Geez Louise, the mid-40s rocked up, and our buddy Harry Newburn, he said, “Let’s bring the University of Law to the masses”. Good on ya, Harry. So, 1947 saw the University opening its doors to all those feisty females dreaming of law degrees. Sly old fox, another feather to his cap!

Going full steam ahead, the University of Law hit a milestone by 1963. A hundred years shedding light on law, a whole century folks. You could almost smell the cake (and the burning of midnight oil!).

And then, the class of 1987 had a splendid surprise. First off, computers! Can you believe it? Smack dab in the middle of the law library. We're talking about a time when owning a computer was pretty much like owning a spaceship. High tech stuff!

Come 20th century’s end, the University was no longer just four walls in the heart of Ulting, Essex. Satellite campuses were popping up left, right, and center. You bet, students could now study law in cities scattered up and down the UK. From Guildford to Leeds, the dream of the legal eagle was now at arm's length.

Fast forward to the 21st century, what with the University of Law being on the Internet and all (I know, love it or hate it but it's here to stay!). The year was 2016, and this little uni had gone big time, students of all nationalities flocking in from every corner of the globe.

And just like that, there you have it. More than a whopping 140 years of baring the light on law, the University of Law stands proud. It’s changed lives of thousands, shaped many a legal luminary. And you out there, considering to be a part of this history, let's remember these great minds. For it was them, who thought; “Why not stir up the minds, inspire the young, and who knows, maybe, give birth to the next 'Big O'?"
