History University of Exeter

Dive into the past and imagine, it's 1855. A big, bold idea finds its feet in the city of Exeter. A group of folks, with a vision for education, got together to start what we now know as the University of Exeter. A chap called Dr Lazenby, a surgeon and academic powerhouse, said, "Let's pack up our ideas, tie them with a bow and launch the Exeter School of Art!" A bright spark, that one!

It wasn't all pomp and glitter, though. They worked tooth and nail — spending more tiffs over the nitty-gritty than we could make a spicy curry out of. They, however, managed to bring their bright dreams to life. With time ticking away, they expanded in 1868, with the "School of Science" opening its grand doors. More like widening the horizons, eh?

Now, hold your horses! The year of 1874 saw a turn of events as dramatic as a Bollywood movie. The Schools of Art and Science fell under one umbrella, creating a synergy of charm and intelligence. What came out was called the "Exeter Technical and University Extension College". Quite a mouthful, isn’t it? Don't worry, it had another twist in the tale. Or should I say, a name meant to bowl you over!

Fast forward to 1893 – the year of change, dah! The crowd’s favourite, Mr Albert Venn Dicey, a wise force and a legal eagle, pitched the idea of renaming the college to "Royal Albert Memorial College". There you have it folks! It got everyone, far and wide, buzzing like bees after honey!

The sails continued to billow. The new millennium rang inand the college, becoming ever-so-popular amongst the bunch, was inaugurated as the awe-inspiring "University college of the South West of England". But, lo and behold, even this name didn't stick around like glue!

Tring-tring! Here we are, ladies and gents, in the big year of 1955. The college, in all its glory, decided to spruce things up – catering to the world on a wider platform. Shedding its old feathers, it embraced the name "The University of Exeter". Think of it like Dhoni's helicopter shot, soaring into the sky and leaving everyone awestruck!

The university, a true cricket team, has never stopped scoring centuries. Advancing with gusto, it marked 1963 as another milestone. With the quest to open doors for all the bright brains out there, it established St. Luke’s College. A gem, adding sparkle to the shining university, it was!

Now, let's bring in some masala. In 2004, a bloke named Steve Smith joined as the Vice-Chancellor. This whizz-bang added a new life to the university - pushing the boundaries even further. He espoused an invigorating motto: “Making the exceptional happen”. Quite a firecracker, he was!

This vibrant journey has shaped the University of Exeter into an illustrious pot of excellence and innovation. From its humble beginnings in 1855, it has truly lived up to its thoughtful motto, “Lucem Sequimur” (We follow the light). Dressed in its glossy maroon and gold robes, it stands proud and tall, just like a pandal welcoming everyone to a grand festivity. Make no mistake, this knowledgeable carnival has just begun!
