Picture this, the year is 1856, and you're in Plymouth, eager to unleash your creativity. Suddenly, the Plymouth Drawing School springs to life. Fast-forward a while, and this institution now lectures as one of the few remaining specialist art schools in all of the United Kingdom!
Progressing into the 21st century, our school festival of knowledge had a fervent following of 20 years under their belt in higher education. Initially, this was hand in hand with the University of Plymouth. We shared a common drive, a mission to construct the groundwork for foundation degrees. We were in an indirect funding partnership, a collaborative reckoning that catapulted our institution forward.
Enter 2006, a year of significant change. The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) bestowed upon us a womanth of directly funded student numbers. As magnificent of a turn this was, the baton of validation affairs moved. Oh yes, it moved to the Open University (OU).
December of 2008 saw us under-going a transformation of sorts. We shed our past and embraced a new identity. Plymouth College of Art and Design transitioned to Plymouth College of the Arts. The art and design vibrancy, still ran through our veins, but it was time for a fresh coat of paint, a new era!
In 2013, we embarked on a groundbreaking journey. Do you remember the famous city-centre free Plymouth School of Creative Arts for 4 to 16-year-olds? Yes, that was us! More like our little creative troupe. The brainchild of Plymouth College and this school was nothing less than a progressive field of creative learning and practice. In this region, we enabled creativity to flow from the early years right up to Master's level study. A spectrum, indeed!
Our school's extraordinary landmark building, The Red House, was formally unwrapped by Sir Nicholas Serota, the Tate Director. Do you recall what he said? He compared our humble launch to a historic milestone in the country's educational history.
As the elapse of time went, 2019 brought us the coveted Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP). Now we stand, an independent Higher Education Institution, wielding the virtuous power to award our own degrees!
Fast-forward to autumn 2020. Can you imagine the joy and fulfilment of our first batch of undergraduate and postgraduate students? They triumphantly graduated. And certainly, their awards accredited by our prestigious institution!
And, now in May 2022, your favorite haven for creativity, Plymouth College of Art, has been awarded University status! We are now, officially, Arts University Plymouth. Our story? Still unfolding and waiting for you to be part of it.
