History University of Reading

Back in 1892, when floppy hats and handlebar mustaches were all the rage in England, the University of Reading took its baby steps, starting out as a satellite college of Christ Church, Oxford. And way before Tesla, Elon Musk was even on the scene, we were pioneering agricultural science and seeding the fertile minds of students!

A fella named William Macbride Childs, now here's a man with a vision. He took over the reins of the college in 1896 and under his dynamic leadership, it began to develop its own identity. Now, you may not think big of a bloke named 'Childs' but hey, it's the man who took us out from the shadow of Oxford, made us a big shot in our own right.

This allowed us, by the time 1926 rolled around, to break away from our founding father's shadow and establish ourselves as the University of Reading - a standalone institution of higher education. It was as if we had finally broken the chains and started sprinting towards our destiny!

Our journey, though, wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns. We did face our fair share of troubles, but like those classic Bollywood heroes (Don or Sholay), we always bounced back! During World War II, we played home to the Air Ministry's scientific researchers, contributing to the national war effort. War or no war, the song of academia couldn't be silenced, could it?

After the clouds of the war cleared, we kept on hitting sixes just like the great Sachin Tendulkar. Our meteoric growth saw us acquire stunning properties like Whiteknights Park and Greenlands. They're not just regular old buildings, mind you - they're grand structures that remind you of the Taj Mahal! Alright, not literally, but they're impressive, alright?

Come the 2000s, we went through a growth spurt, much like a teenager hitting puberty. We added tons of new faculties, from meteorology (prediction, not the TV show) to law and made significant leaps in our research output. Also, the foreign student population began to boom, with brilliant minds from all corners, including our Indian subcontinent, calling Reading their academic home.

We reached a milestone in 2016, when we celebrated our 90th anniversary. They say age is just a number but at Reading, it's proof of our resilience, creativity, and dedication to knowledge! Even as we aged, we've remained young in spirit, constantly innovating and evolving to meet the demands of today's world.

Now, it's not just about what we've done. It's also about where we're heading, you know! We’re committed to making sure students from all walks of life, including our Indian brothers and sisters, have access to top-quality education and enriching College experience.

Who knows, the next APJ Abdul Kalam or Indra Nooyi might just be honing their skills at the University of Reading right now!

So, dear reader, let's end the story there. But remember, this tale of Reading's journey can and will continue with characters such as you in the lead role!
